KHARTOUM, Sudan -- A Sudanese airliner crashed shortly after taking off from Port Sudan airport early Tuesday, killing 105 passengers and 11 crew, the official Sudan News Agency reported. Only a child survived.
The Boeing 737 was on an internal flight from the Sudanese city on the Red Sea to the capital, Khartoum, when its captain reported trouble, the director of Sudan Airways, Ahmed Ismail Zuwary, told the news agency.
The plane crashed in an empty about three miles from the airport, he said.
Government spokesman Salah Ali Ahmed told Sudanese national television that a child survived and was in good condition in a hospital.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Investigators would be sent to the scene, Sudanese officials said.
It is not yet known if there were foreigners on board.
