Oil at $105

So many variables. . .not enough time.

But simply - local Supply and Demand is a huge player in the run up in prices. Every consumer trying to find that last best deal before $4.00 gallon. And honestly, at that point in the curve, demand is much higher than local supply, and the availability of the next shipment, that the price can be adjusted quickly upwards.

Now, coming back down. . .you're right - it is price gouging, but we clearly can not utilize that as a reason to boycott our ability to purchase fuels to get to and from work, or to perform our job.

The moment you realize we are gripped tightly at the balls and get down to the nitty-gritty of the energy, and specifically the local economics of the oil industry, we'll simply just keep crying price gouging and they'll just laugh.

Yep, the PFD is going to be 3269.00 this year...and a month early at that. Something Sarah Palin got worked out, but of course that isn't reported in the press.

Let's see....$3269, that will pay for 15 gallons of gas a week for the year. Not a bad deal...

So. . .in essence. . .we're subsidizing energy purchases.

Much like the Chinese, and other developing countries.

Spectacular.

But of course, it's not a subsidy. . .yeah yeah - whatever.

15 gallons of gas a week? What you guys stockpiling this stuff again (still)?

I use 10 gallons of gas over three weeks; if I don't work much, a month. Maybe that's our problem, not properly managing our energy use. . .no. . .we wouldn't want to educate people about ways to conserve this precious resource.

I am not an Alaskan resident, but my Mom lives up there and keeps me up to date on the local issues. The 15 gallon a week figure was taking the PFD and figuring at the current 4.19 a gallon quoted earlier in the thread.

I don't really think it's a subsidy per se, but one of the "deals" that was cut in order to get the pipeline put in. Personally, you couldn't pay me 10,000 a year extra to live up there...just too cold for my taste!

Sure we can. Don't buy gas from those stations. I saw gas at $3.55 a gallon at one station, and two red lights down, it was $3.35. There goes the local supply theory. There's plenty of stations around here selling at $3.35 now, but there are still plenty selling at $3.45-3.55. Drive down the interstate about 20 miles, and it's up to $3.65.

This weekend I bought AvGas for $4.36 a gallon at a self-fill. (T74, if anyone is interested) and I actually thought that was okay.

Of course, I filled up again at TKI and it was $6.39 there. Argh. Should have kept flying another 20nm north and filled up at SWI. I was tired, though.

That's great for you, you drive to work probably once every 4 days. Most people in this world drive to work 2x 5 days a week, if not more. It has nothing to do with educating people about "energy use", if people could work a job that required them to drive less I bet $5 they'd take it. Get off your high horse. Everyone is cutting back driving, we all know more driving = more money out of pocket.

Well, the problem is that the PFD is not for gas, the permanent fund dividend was set up because every citizen of alaska owns the mineral rights to the state. That's what's in the constitution. The PFD is because we live in Alaska, the gas rebate is Sarah's elect me ticket. The gas rebate is supposed to be primarily for villages where heating oil is highest, or places like Dili where fuel is $7.50/gal.

That being said, we refine some of the gas here, it should be cheap.

I know it's not for gas per se, I was using it as an example how it can be used to offset the price of gas, or heating oil, or internet porn. I wish the refining argument worked for you guys, then maybe I could catch a break here in Texas! :) But I know that ain't happening!

I agree on the AvGas...it's BS that it's 4.70 at my FBO and I can go 15 miles away and it's 5.80 a gallon. Talk about gouging!!!

High Horse?

You're quite emotional recently, need to see a shrink? What's your deal?

Yeah, my wife drives to/from work 5 times a week. We also use her vehicle to do any errands, or go out for an evening. Big deal.

But we have also found ways to manage our vehicle energy use that still means a cost savings to us over last year's fuel usage. That savings, into a savings account, provides us even more money to spend on future expenditures.

But yeah - my high horse. . .:whatever:

100LL is 6.59 a gallon here at exec air!

Blame the owner of the airport for the high(er) price of fuel at some airports. One of the airports close by (FTY) has the highest 100LL around Atlanta. Fulton County has the highest sales tax in the metro area and also heaps on an extra avgas tax on top of that. Most of the other airports in the area are about a $1-1.30 a gallon less than both the FBOs there as a result.

So if your airport's avgas prices are obscene in comparison to everyone else around, it may be time to get you and some of your other flying buddies together and raise hell at each and every county commission meeting for the next few months. Remind them that they'll actually bring in more tax money if they sell more gas, which they're more likely to do if they lower their taxes.

Most people in this world drive to work 2x 5 days a week, if not more.

If you're driving to work more than five days a week, then in my book you've got problems far beyond your driving habits.

You've got to learn that you work to live and it's not the other way around.

And I highly doubt there is anyone who only drives to and from work. That means anyone can reduce how much they drive.

Tony,

I know a lot of people at my wife's previous job that would often drive home for lunch, to let the dogs out, etc. etc. Also people do what we need to do to survive, I know a couple fellow downgrades are applying at places like Home Depot, Lowe's etc. for a second job.

And I highly doubt there is anyone who only drives to and from work. That means anyone can reduce how much they drive.
Yes but then they are only "Living to work" ;). I agree, people can cut down, and they have as evidenced by the government statistics showing greatly reduced driving over the last year. But there is a point where you just can't drive less, personally my wife and I are at that level as are others we know.
