Well there's all different types of flying so it's hard to say that all pilots have risky careers. Commercial flying is much safer than general aviation and then there's Alaska of course. And the average private pilot probably has a bigger fatality rate in a C-172 on a cloudy day then someone's who's proficient and flies carefully on a clear day. Like almost anything else; it's as safe as you make it I guess.
