IBS Questions

Hello,

I currently hold a First Class Medical. 25 years old. I do have asthma, but other than that I have no other existing conditions. I recently had some stomach bloating (NOT stomach pain or cramping). Went to a gastro doctor and he ran some lab work (blood test, lactose tolerance test, pancreas elastase test) and everything came back perfect. To be aggressive and make sure it wasn't Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis we went ahead and did a colonoscopy (this was more for my peace of mind to be honest). He said everything looked perfect. So, he basically classified it as IBS that was related to stress and diet (I'd been under a lot of stress lately working long hours in addition to pursuing my CFI). The whole thing has been a bit odd as I have never had any stomach issues at all.

I looked at the CACI - Colitis worksheet and it seems like I shouldn't have any issue getting my First Class. I'm not taking any medication for it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The FAA has new criteria to allow the AME to issue a medical certificate when the airman has Colitis (Colitis is(Ulcerative, Regional Enteritis or Crohn's disease) or Irritable Bowel Syndrome) without going through the Special Issuance process. Applicants for first- or second- class must provide this information annually; applicants for third-class must provide the information with each required exam. Without this documentation, the AME cannot issue the medical certificate and must defer the certification decision to the FAA.
A current status report fromt he trating physician.

Thanks. I noticed the letter. I have to do the same thing for my asthma. I'll be sure to get one of those from my doctor.

Take all of reports with you when you go for your medical examination, it sounds like it will satisfy the requirements of the colitis CACI. If that is the case the examiner should be able to issue a certificate through the regular issuance procedure.
