Is it normal to not even wear a helmet or something when doing this kind of stuff? It seems like if I'm going to be that close to the ground and trees and other potential points of entanglement I'd want to wear one... Dude is dressed pretty casually.

Some guys do, some guys don't. I prefer to personally. But there's no formal requirement.
