Aviation Medical Examination

To anyone who has recently had a full aviation medical examination. Was their a hearing test? Are there published standards for issuance of first/second/third class medical?

Years ago I was told I can't hold anything other than a 3rd class medical, but I honestly can't remember why. I want to say it was because of my vision, but I'm thinking now it was because of my hearing.

Previous AME's tested my hearing by talking to me. Current AME uses the full "ping" headphone test from the early 70's. But for $70 I'm not complaining.

My AME takes his desk clock off his desk and has you nod your head in beat with the seconds when you can hear it. I think this may be one area where the AME can use any method they deam fit.
