Atlantic Southeast Airlines/ExpressJet

mj and scrt: Congrats on the jobs! Found out a few days ago I'm in the Nov 7th class. I'd love to hear a bit about what the first few days are like. Big question - what time do you recommend trying to arrive in Houston on the 6th? Any items you've figured out from your first day that you wish you brought but didn't, or are really glad you did? What hotel and what are the rooms like? Are they suites or just generic two bed single rooms? Hopefully with a good table to study on? What info do they give you on the first day? Any other information in general? PM me if you don't want to post in public. Thanks!

generic two bed rooms. there is a study room on floor 2. ask for microwave and refrigerator as soon as you get there. First day was all corporate stuff. enjoy the video of the old man shooting up in the stairwell. get to the hotel early so you can pick which side of the room you want. Every tuesday there is free dinner and Beer down stairs. if you are close enough to drive i would suggest driving.

Thanks - oh one more kinda silly question. Assuming that you are not supposed to wear uniforms during training, is there a dress code? Slacks and button downs? Anything vaguely professional? When the time comes, do you have to pay for all of your uniform gear?

collared shirts and nice slacks are fine. as long as you are clothed they really dont care too much. Uniforms are payroll deducted. beware the lady is the most crooked sales person ever.

Business casual.

You'll get extra points if you don't wear khakis with your favorite pair of Sperry's looking like some sort of fisherman.

So, business casual. Clean pants, nice shoes, clean shirt, be groomed...

Have any of you new hires done the ASA/DL flight ops internship? I was talking to a recruiter a few days ago, she made it sound like you were set if you did an internship with any airline, not even just ASA or DL. Mainly through reduced minimums, connections, ect...

I did the Mesaba internship and it only helps for the airline in which you did it at, even after the announcement of their merger I coldnt get hired until I met the mins for Colgan or Pinnacle. Mesaba eventually hired a guy that did it with me at reduced mins but he is now 100 numbers JR to me. So it really doesnt do much unless its for the airline your interviewing at. Other airlines do not care.

That's what I thought too, but the ASA recruiter said that ANY flight ops internship would give me the reduced minimums. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should spend a summer doing an internship with either AA or DL or spend the summer building time...

Based on my experience with several of the ASA/XJT recruiters / interviewers, they are pretty open and honest. I would believe what they say - if you have a specific question, call or email one of them, or get confirmation from someone else before you make specific plans for the summer. You might flat out ask them if you are better off taking the internship or building extra time.

I was at that fair too. The GoJet's guy said to go do ATP's CRJ Transition. Did you hear that too?

That is complete crap!!!! Go ahead and believe it but you are a moron if you do. Pinnacle was hiring since I completed the internship and they owned Mesaba, they wouldnt even give me the time of day until I met the mins, the director of flight ops even tried to get us over there. I talked to Compass, ASA and Eagle too and nothing ( 2 of which I had VERY good personal contacts in HR). The closest thing it got me was no 500 ME at Compass because of systems ground school from it, which they now offer to everyone so really that didnt even do it. I repeat it only works for the airline In which you do it. BUILD time! Do what you want though its not my career. With all that said it was an amazing experience and I learned a TON and I would do it again ( not now but before, I also flew 100 hrs during my time there in a 172 so I didnt get behind in flying hrs) butI can guarantee it wont get you anywhere for anyone else, it IS airline specific.

Sorry you had a bad experience; I can only speak to my own. That being said, I had pretty high total time and some turbine experience (though not much) to boot when I applied. The two guys I delt with over there were very straightforward with me and with the exception of it taking a little longer to hear back than they said, everything they told me was spot on.

I also mentioned that he should get confirmation from more than just one recruiter independently, to make sure there isn't one guy with a misunderstanding. Even better if it's in writing somewhere (posted on their website, brochure, letter, something). Maybe he's better off looking at this as a learning experience - what's a better opportunity to improve himself, as opposed to what is a better opportunity to get to the airline a few months faster. Over the last ten years, most of my attempts at shortcuts have extended my time waiting for an airline job, not accelerated it. Just my 2 cents.
