Non-revving in First, and Facebook

Oh man, I feel so bad for you guys. You have to try hard and coordinate and get unfortunate sometimes with your FREE FLIGHTS all over the world. It must suck waking up, checking the loads and deciding "Hey I could use a couple day trip to ____" and listing, and getting there.

The people who should be complaining is ATC'ers. They are responsible for hundreds of lives every minute. In one shift they are in charge of more lives than a doctor will be in his entire career (depending on traffic). They work for every airline essentially, and yet recieve what a few FAM trips that can't even be used for personal travel like non-revers.

I've non-reved a handful of times on Buddy Passes, I've done the PHX-IAH-SAT-TUL BNA-CLE, I've done the get up at 3am, list for a 5am to BNA sick on 2 hours of sleep only to be stuck at BNA finally getting on flight number 5 8hrs later,

I don't feel bad for you guys! Nobody should belittle rampers or whatever position just b/c of their job title.

Haha I guess that seemed pissy but it wasn't mean to. It was more of a laughing at the situation to be honest. I got a little annoyed by the calling out of service workers, but all in all I didn't mean to sound confrontational.

I just don't feel bad for any of you guys with free flights. :)

We're not all airline pilots on here.;)

Well, I think what upsets some people on here, but no one has mentioned it yet is the fact that a flight crew member is usually non-revving to get home or to work. What are the chances that a ramper or non-crew member employee is also commuting to work? Therefore the flight crew member could be bumped on their commute by the non-flight crew employee that is traveling for leisure.

As it's been told to me, two employees at the gate waiting to see who gets on.

Flight crew member: "It's been a brutal 5 day, I can't wait to get home to see my kids."

Non-flight crew employee: "Yeah, I did not know we do five day trips out of this base. Im going to XYZ to go to my third cousin's wedding. I wouldn't go if I didn't have these benefits. We're just not close enough for me to justify buying a ticket."

Flight crew: "Right on."

Conversation continues until the gate agent calls the non-flight crew member up because of being their own equipment, senior DOH, checked in first, or whatever... The flight crew member drops his head and tries for the next flight.

Granted, I don't have a dog in the hunt but this was a story told to me over a beer by said crew member while he was venting. It is a different perspective on why non-rev privileges are valuable to employees.

I see your point I do, but think about it this way. That non-flight crew member probably doesn't use, nor does he get to use those non-rev privileges nearly as much as that flight crew member does for one. Whether that flight-crew member has to all the time for commuting or not, it's a privilege he uses all the time clearly in this case. Not to mention, sometimes you just have to be a little selfish or you won't get anywhere if you just let people jump you on sympathy.. If you're always holding the door open for others all the day, when do you get to go in? Plus it seems like you said it was the non-flight crew members own equipment, so why should he get bumped by a regional or whatever the flight crew member belonged to if it wasn't that airline?

Are you f'n kidding me? If you want the flight benefits, you know how to get them. It starts with about a $150k investment into your education and training. What, don't want to do that? Then stop bitching about our "free" flights.

I swear, sometimes people make me want to punch a baby seal.

Was this aimed at me? I'm not eligible for any of this, I am completely outside of the equation since at the moment I have no relation with an airline.

I'm just giving my perspective as someone with no bias at all.

Yes it was directed at you, and the fact that you have no relation to any airline is even more reason to not say a word about our pass benefits.

Oh look, another self-entitled person. Get off your high horse seriously. I simply state an opinion and you go and get all bent out of shape like some angry old man. I don't have benefits, but I do have a close friend whose father is a Captain at Southwest who lives in PHX but goes out of Denver, so I know how it goes and can and will speak on it.

A large majority of the pilots on this forum seem very reasonable, but sadly then we have guys like you who think that anyone who works in aviation and isn't a pilot is beneath them. Some people can't afford to spend 150k on flight training. Nobody made you do that... Some guys go through military and learn along the way and don't have too much to pay back. Some people like other aspects of flying. Things you certainly know, but must forget.

I am an Aviation Management major, with a few years of ATC CTI training, who is going for his flight dispatch, and will have over 60k in debt. If I do so decide to work a few years on the ramp or behind the counter, so be it. Does not make me lesser than you, and if you really think that then you live a sad sad life. Lets see you bust your butt to put hundreds of bags on a flight in 100 degree weather or 5 degree weather. Lets see you get chewed out by some angry pax because they overslept and the plane wasn't held for them. Your job is certainy no cakewalk, but part of the reason you spend 150k on training is to do something you love, and in some lucky pilots cases, make 100k a year more than that while choosing your own schedule.

So, although my original post was in good spirit and just presenting a different opinion, you sir can kiss my butt. ;)

I'm fine, I just simply state there are two sides, and in turn I got my head ripped off and told I am not allowed to talk about pass benefits. I don't take kindly to folks trying to condescend someone else around here simply because they don't fully agree with them.

I could have been a lot meaner. Good thing for him I am likely not doing ATC anymore, or anytime I dealt with an ATN pilot, I'd send them through the ringer a few times :bounce:

Yeah, it might be a good thing to steer clear of jobs where "depressurizing" the situation would be more beneficial than "sending them through the ringer"

Er, well, if that's how you see it, then I'm really glad you aren't doing ATC anymore.

You can thank the FAA and their bull crap haha. Hey, if I would have done ATC it have been my job to tick off some pilots, that's the way it works. Pilots and ATC are like cats and dogs, israel and palestine, Hatfield and McCoy.... ok you get it lol.

I think it's obvious I wouldn't really have done that.

Really? Most every controller I deal with on a daily basis is great. Ive never once been ticked off as most controllers are professional and realize their job isn't some game.

Good to hear, that's how it should be. I guess I allowed hearsay and that one thread on here about Pilot Deviation give me an impression I shouldn't have. Regardless, I wouldn't have been that way but it really doesn't matter now does it b/c I am probably done with ATC.
