Features you'd like to see at Jetcareers

I would love a Member intro forum as a sub-forum to the Member announcement forum. I hesitate to say it should be a requirement to post an intro, but maybe a de-facto rule or something. This way new members could post an intro and break the ice. Maybe help bring some of the lurkers out of the shadows.

You ever hear of Virginia O'Hanlon? The response she got from her letter is the same concept going on here shorty....

Hey!!!!

Don't forget that I'm: balding, uncoordinated, out of shape, about as useful as a football bat, and lazy....

Is there any way to tweak the profanity filter to be a little less sensitive?

Example:

Q: What 1964 film starred Clint Eastwood as the "Man With No Name"?

A: A Fil of Dollars

I'm not trying to tell anyone to ess tee eff uoo, but I can't use those letters in sequence never mind the fact that it's a normal innocent word.

I'm looking more for suggested features more than gripes about the moderation filter. Thank your friendly neighborhood "can't express anger without cursing" poster.

The ess tee eff you, largely was because immature posters who couldn't express frustration without resorting to lazily-written "Stephen Cannell"-esque insults drove me to put the kibosh on that abbreviation.

It'll be back eventually.

I'd like to see a wiki of sorts. There are a lot of duplicate posts asking the same questions every month and it would be nice to direct them to a static page a wiki rather than searching for an old post to link or re-answering the question. A wiki could also be used to maintain some of the things in sticky threads, like the furlough tracking thread in the airline forum. It would be a nice addition and eventually when some good content has been created by some us it could augment the overall website.

Creating a wiki is a good idea. However, viewing a FAQ is just about as easy as preforming a search, and we know how many times the thread goes...just fdo a search for xxxx.

Similar to the "thread subjects which get addressed ad nausium" or whatever that section is called that threads go to die, ?I would love to see a subsection that political/religious/ridiculously dumb-never to die- threads go. Just like wading through 10 pages of the members list to find a member, sometimes these threads are ones that need to go someplace else.

Right after the 'New Jersey is Where Real Men are Born; Who go out and Bless Other State's with Their Presence Forum'

That would of course be after the "I'm not from Texas, but I got here as fast as I could." forum, right? :)

Maybe better search capability for the threads?

It is highly possible that I haven't used the search engine correctly, but when I have tried searching for phrases in the past, I get every post with each word in the phrase, but not the phrase itself.

A Flight School/FBO review would be awesome and would eliminate threads like "Is this a good school?" lol

how would you validate the FBO review threads? would you have the poster give credentials on when they attended and how far they got or what would you base that on?

we know there are some people out there who just enjoying pouring vinegar all over anything flight school related, esp if they've had a bad experience.

Doug,

I've been giving this some thought, and I don't know if this is something you have any control over.

The forum software is really, really good, but I have immense problems with the search engine on the site. I'm used to boolean searches or phrase-searches and I can never seem to find what I want, surgically. If I broaden the net I can usually find stuff better, but I have to wade through a LOT of stuff to find what I want.

So I don't know if the search engine is modular or what, or if it can be updated or changed. I wouldn't mind a sticky on how the JC search engine works, either, since I'm sure I could use it more effectively if I knew how.

A 'Doug Taylor for President Forum'

How about create a sub forum called "In the Van" and the only person that can post to it is, "Doug Taylor."

Get it? Get it? I still have family members asking me who Doug Taylor is, and why he was in the van.

Here's the way to properly search Jetcareers.

Go to Google.

At the end of your search string, add "site:forums.jetcareers.com"

So as an example, I may want to search for information about Cessna 172's. My search string could go something like this:

"cessna 172" site:forums.jetcareers.com

Works way better than the forums search function.

I'm glad my actions are enlightening your family with conversation!

I'm working on a refresh of the main website and was wondering what types of features would you like to see?

No idea is too goofy, just let me know what's on your mind.
It'd be nice if I could type in all caps. LET ME YELL, WILL YOU. :)

EDIT: whoa, weird....it wasn't letting me yell in all caps, earlier.

I want more emoticons. I can not properly express myself with just :p, ;), :D, and :nana2:. I need two smilies toasting some beers, one smiley puking, a smiley throwing a grenade, a smiley actually beating a dead horse, a smiley giving a thumbs up and, a smiley with poo hitting a fan then subsequently hitting the smiley itself. If you could go ahead and take care of that then that would be great. Mmmmkay?
