Skywest Questions

Per the PPM PBS should max out at 19 duty periods in a bid, so only in a 31 day bid period (May, July, August, October, and December). The rest of the year 11 is all you are guaranteed to get.
So if you're getting 10 or less days off, you are specifically bidding for that.

Funny, I never waive anything yet I've ended up a couple months with 10 days off. Probably had something to do with carry-in pairings but it's happened once or twice in the last 6 months. PBS helpline was no help. But considering that often times it's impossible to build a valid line "per constraints" in less than 19 days a month, I don't expect more than minimum days off anyways.

I bid an increasing credit to time away from base ratio. I usually start at around 2.5 and end on the max of 4.0

Sometimes I get a lot of annoying day trips out of SFO to LAX and back. I drive to work but driving in the SF Bay is a nightmare at times. I could see this being a horrible option for a commuter.

Anyway I've had a lot of luck with that and its the only filter on my bid. It seems that keeping it simple is key when you are as poor of a percentage as I was.

Domicile awards are out. DEN, BOI, SLC, and of course ORD went very junior for 175 FOs.

Also, now I’m going to be living in base for the first time of my career.

No surprise, the company is passing over SLC CRJ FO's and giving it to ERJ FO's only. With no TDT, I may add. Kinda funny how they tell us the base is overstaffed, costing a lot of money, and they expect people to make the transition.............but don't let people make the transition??

I can't take credit for it, but there are times when what a friend of mine said seems too appropriate.

"Welcome to SkyWest... where the rules are made up and seniority doesn't matter."

Granted it seems that a lot of the crankiness comes from exploitation of the vagueness of the PPM and the many ill defined gray areas, but there are times where, in the interest of fostering goodwill, the company would (should?) perhaps be less interested in doing those things that while technically permitted don't go over too well with the pilot group.

It's going to be a repeat of last month. People will question and ask why they were passed for someone junior, and they will say "operational need" and leave it at that.

I can't imagine being a pilot here for over 4-5 years and being passed on a base to someone not out of training.

I understand the company’s need to have flying staffed by certain dates. And I get that because those dates are set by the partners there is not always time to run transition classes. But isn’t that the whole point of TDT? Or if there aren’t enough TDT bids why can’t they bridge he trips from overstaffed domiciles ala all the SLC CRJ guys doing MSP and DTW flying? If there was a good reason to award out of seniority like they do maybe people wouldn’t be so upset. Sadly “operational need” has become the equivalent of when your parents said “because” and it’s not going over well.

The initial bids for SLC 175 were TDT. Not sure what happened in the last 2 months.

The answer people I know who were bypassed got was universally vague and non-commital. From talking with a SAPA rep it all came down to operational need and not having the time to wait for guys to go through transition class. I have yet to hear a good reason why but the best hypothesis I have head so far is that allowing people off the CRJ would leave us at or below the staffing numbers needed to prevent cancellations this summer. All just conjecture but that’s the best guess of a reason I have heard so far.

As it turns out you can write some VERY UNAMBIGUOUSLY CLEAR things into the book, too, and people will still be displeased.
"A pilot who does not enter a proffer may still receive an assignment during the awarding of proffers in accordance with Paragraph 3Dof this section."
Yup - "UNAMBIGUOUSLY CLEAR."

So apparently FAs are being told in CQ to not give water bottles to the pilots. Seriously!?!? As J. Hook would say, bad form, bad form.

I flew with a brand new FA a couple months ago that said that one of her classmates was fired for taking a water bottle off the airplane. The classmate was SLC based and apparently got reported. I'm sure there was more to the story but that's all I heard.

Ryanair does that too!

So .... um..... what do they expect you to do in Mexico?
