Say what you will, Jerry never did this…

Because the AIM explicitly tells you not to use it, that’s why.

Aeronautical Information Manual section 4-1-9(g)(1) states:

“Pilots stating traffic in the area, ‘please advise’ is not a recognized self-announce position and/or intention phrase and should not be used under any conditions.”

Bottom line, it’s wrong

Fair enough. How about a “how’s it going out there guys?” After the initial call ;)

I don’t trust GArpies. Some of them aren’t even required to have radios depending on where they are. And some don’t broadcast on CTAF.

What if — and I know this sounds crazy — but what if everyone was making the AIM-recommended calls already and you just shut up and listened on CTAF instead of clogging up the airwaves with something that manual literally says not to use, verbatim?

See above. Your unicorns might exist in the best of circumstances. I try to operate assuming I’m dealing with the lowest common denominator when it comes to other planes. Don’t assume anything.

I mean, "all pilots are crap until they demonstrate otherwise" isn't a bad defensive flying strategy and it is one I employ on a regular basis, but in this case, broadcasting that phrase equates to being a crappy pilot, etc.

"Any traffic please advise" just chews up airtime that could be used for "Bublefrak traffic, Legacy twenty-one-thirty-five, right downwind runway three five, Bumblefrak," which is why the AIM specifically says to not use it. That traffic is already happily advising you; all you really have to do is tune CTAF and listen.

Assuming they’re talking.

If current procedures worked, we’d never have midair’s. There have been far too many collisions in the pattern.

I, for one, am glad I don’t do any non-towered ops anymore. *and even a tower is no guarantee of a collision free environment. See San Diego brown field IAI jet and a Cessna.

Man during Covid I had sole access to a plane for a month. Had to call the flight school to have a mechanic come out to jump it. All good and he leaves. I taxi to the self serve pumps and without even thinking shut down. As soon as I did it I was like “oh • that was dumb.” Wasn’t willing to call for another jump so my dumb ass dragged and pushed that plane halfway across the airport up a slight slope back to parking and went home lol

He’s not unlucky, he’s not using systems knowledge.

If you’re not mechanically-inclined and you get your car jumped, you take it straight to a garage to check out your battery and alternator — YOU DON’T GO ON A FLIPPING ROAD TRIP TO DISNEY.

The cosmos isn’t saying “don’t fly” it’s saying “You’re going to die if you don’t start using common sense”

Not when it's:

"Center, Airliner 123?"
"Airliner 123, go ahead."
"Center, Airliner 123, request."
"Airliner 123 go ahead with your request."
"Center, Airliner 123, we'd like to go ahead and put XXX on request."

Me: *Smashes own headset with fist*
2/10 for accuracy, missing about 5 transmissions regarding what the rides are like at the new altitude

Using your own assumptions, why do you think "any traffic please advise" would make a difference?

They still don't have to talk. They won't hear you if they aren't tuned in. Etc, etc. Seems like a complete waste of time and just makes you look dumb.

Newsflash, at times when you would ask this there could be other planes in the vicinity that don’t even have a radio. You’ll be talking to yourself.

Right, the idea is the guy in the pattern at uncontrolled airport would comment that he was there, and that he see/knows a Piper Cub in the pattern too who isn’t talking.

Midair’s are one touchy subject where the NTSB will throw your ass under the bus as they cite a “failure to see and avoid,” nevermind the inherent limitations of that very concept.

You're almost certainly going to be dead when they do, so who gives a •? Save us your unnecessary radio traffic.
