Say what you will, Jerry never did this…

Get back to me after you have to talk a guy down from practically declaring an emergency just because we were delayed on arrival until after tower closed for the night.
I once heard this exchange near an untowered field during IFR conditions.

Paraphrased some.

Appr Ctrl: Regional carrier cleared for the RNAV approach radar services terminated change to advisory frequency approved
Regional carrier: You cant terminate our radar services, we are IFR
Regional carrier: How are we supposed to stay clear of other traffic we are IMC.
Appr Ctrl: .............
Appr Ctrl: There are no radar targets between you and the field sir.
Regional Carrier: .......but we are on an IFR clearance.
Appr Ctrl: I can't see you on the radar anymore. What would you have me do?
Regional carrier landed uneventfully

Southwest used to cancel in the air going into ECP lol

Different airlines have different rules for canceling early (not talking about the crew not understand what radar services terminated means). I’ve flown for airlines were VFR was prohibited and at my currently airline it is allowed under certain circumstances.

had this argument with a 15yr NB CA (former tomcat driver, you know) who said it should be illegal to fly an airliner out of radar coverage or untowered fields because he didn’t know if there were vfr targets going into Queretaro at night in IMC.

(i still work at the same airline and now am in radar coverage maybe 5% of the day)

Sadly, I can see that happening.

I was the instructor on the required IFR dual cross country. ATC sent us to an IAF, terminated radar services, and cleared us for the approach. My student asked for vectors to final. The controller laughed.

At least that was a student, but I have heard too many pilots think it’s abnormal.

“Any traffic in the area please advise”
FO on OE argued with me that it was a “required call” and they would be making it as PM. (Their old flight school required it, apparently)

We had a long chat after landing in PUW about why he had to sit out that approach and landing.

Flying into uncontrolled airports was everyday life in the Dash Trash…one of those things that doesn’t even get my event meter to flinch.

Now, let’s talk about the Capt who wanted me to “request progressive” taxi, in DTW…IN THE SIM…because “Low vis is dangerous”.

Meh, I’d rather “any traffic plz advise” than not. Help prevent a midair. Also if I had to, I’d rather take progressives than be lost at DTW like NWA 1482.

With modern SMCGGS charts and lighting, it’s not as big a deal.

No it doesn’t do that at all.

Asking the question in an environment that may not yield the results you’re looking for sets you up for a false sense of security and leads you into confirmation bias.

If you ask the question and receive no response that doesnt mean that there isn’t anyone in the pattern or on approach. So why do it in the first place.

I don’t mind the meowing and the with yous but this one bugs me. Stop it.

I never said take silence to that response as gospel no one is around. But often what it did do at a place like Pellstom, MI was let us know from one guy who cleared the runway that he was doing pattern work and there’s still one other guy in the pattern, landing on 23. That was good to know, because we were coming in on Rwy 32. If it helps prevent the next Quincy disaster, why not.

Because the AIM explicitly tells you not to use it, that’s why.

Aeronautical Information Manual section 4-1-9(g)(1) states:

“Pilots stating traffic in the area, ‘please advise’ is not a recognized self-announce position and/or intention phrase and should not be used under any conditions.”

Bottom line, it’s wrong
