You need to work a job that really sucks, then get back to us.
During a "break from the industry", I had a job as a meatcutter.
I worked the 3rd shift, 9pm to 5am. In a cooler at 38dF. Stood on a hard rubber mat and my only coworkers in this little slice of paradise spoke zero English. At the end of the night, we had to pressure wash the whole cooler with hot water and disinfectant.
When I got home at 5:30am, I was tired, cold, my hands were swollen, I was covered head to toe with meat bits and I reeked of lamb juice and bleach.
BUT....
I was home every night. In slept in my own bed. I could make plans. I could hang out with friends on the weekend. I could have a beer and watch the game. I could eat healthy and work out because I had the time to do so and I didn't have to carry a pitiful little basket of food with me, praying the hotel had a fridge. I could go out with someone and didn't need 3 months of calendars to schedule the next date.
In short, my life did not revolve around work. Aside from the actual work part, it was awesome.
So before selling short the sacrifices everyone in this business makes, everyone should consider the big picture.
Life is more than what you do. Sure, selling our skills and experience to our employers is part of it, but more than anything else, we are selling time out of our lives.
A LOT of it. Never forget that.
