Reno race crash in front of grandstands

Santa Fe College has a flight program? Instructor, student, fuel, 172...are they lengthening the runway?

Edit: Oh, it's in Florida. Well, that makes sense.

Same goes for SCUBA diving, the media is consistently wrong, in exactly the same ways, most times. The most common is our 'oxygen' tanks. I've known several people interviewed by the media, and they've all said the press wrote their own article, even changing the order of sentences to completely change the intent and meaning of what was said.

I really feel for the folks at the show, and their and the pilot's friends and loved ones.

So sad... I just hope the outcome is the same with what happened to desert racing in southern california after a crash that took out spectators...

It shouldn't be. BLM didn't keep up their end of the bargain. 300 spectators 50 feet back is what the permit called for. But they were literally close enough to touch the trucks. My sister in-laws boyfriend was there and watched it all happen. The difference here is that everyone was following proper safety protocol. People are suing BLM because they lost children in an event that was poorly run, and broke pretty much every rule that was written in the permits to follow. MDR will be back though. Maybe under a different name, or different circumstances, but it will be back.

The 1955 Le Mans thing was horrible, and Ramstein the worst. Bill Odom, flying Beguine in 1949 slammed into a house killing a woman and her infant daughter. After that you saw the races move to the desert (Mojave, Reno). I'm not sure you can make it much safer without making the event near unwatchable (by moving the crowd incredibly far from the course). Even at that, a Mustang going 490+ can cover a lot of ground in a hurry so it is just one of those "Stuff happens" deals - fluke type thing. A similar thing happened with a plane named Voodoo a handful of years ago - modified Mustang lost its elevator trim causing a violent pitch up and I think the pilot even passed out for a moment. Not sure if I'm recalling correctly.

Exactly. The issue with the plane, whatever it may have been, unfortunitly happened in the ONE turn where the aircraft really face toward the crowd. I suppose thats the difference between a crash and a disaster, things going wrong at the worst possible time/place.

Just a simpleton's idea here... but wouldn't it be an easy increase in crowd safety to move the stands to the inside of the turn, rather than the outside? I mean.... years of motorsport have taught me one thing when it comes to watching racing: Never stand on the outside of a turn. Ever. No matter how far away you are. Period. Almost no one ever goes off toward the apex...

Pretty chilling new video came out today. Its on the MSNBC website if anyone has an interest in seeing it. I don't feel quite right posting it but if you all would like, I will.

I watched one or two vids never finished, I just wanted to see what occurred. 2 seconds into the aftermath I shut it off. It makes me sick.

Part of me wants to see pieces of the plane. Some emails going back and forth amongst people who were there have details like the aircraft broke into pieces so small it looked like the aircraft was made of legos.

I have been to a couple of WW2 era crashes around the bay area hills. I always find tiny pieces of aluminum, and leave them. It just amazes me how small the pieces are.

When I heard that I thought maybe that could have killed him. 22G instantaneous pull could break a neck I would think.

I have interrupted three idiots spouting off crap they knew nothing about, and then told them I don't know much either and that no one really knows yet and to say stupid stuff is....well.....STUPID!

Would depend on his head positioning at the time. With instantaneous onset though, he would likely have been unconscious before anything else happened. Even with a G-suit and strain from being prepared for it, hypothetically, it likely wouldn't have made a difference with those numbers.

Why waste your time? You're not going to change anyone's mind.

It's like getting road rage and trying to correct idiot drivers on the road. Even if you somehow do manage to correct one, there's 1000 more to replace that one within the next 1 minute.

I'd think it would pull a wing off.

Would depend on how long the structure was feeling it.....any longer than it was in this case or beyond instantaneous, and that very well could've been a possibility, along with the empennage or fuselage.

I just watched the new video on MSNBC and Its sickening to be honest. I had friends sitting at the far end of that box and I was supposed to be there with them. They were okay but Said that the scene was awful. I am glad I was not there in person to witness it.
