Plane Down in Buffalo - Colgan Continental Flight 3407

RIP, I'm glad to see it wasn't any JCr's and my prayers go to the the JC members who knew the crew.

I was reading a little into turboprop icing problems. Apparently since the ATR crash in Indiana the FAA has been getting pressured for the past 15 years to impose a better de-icing system for turboprops by the NTSB. It was fairly high on the NTSB's list of safety concerns.

I went to EWR yesterday to help in any way I could with the crewmembers. I thought it would be very difficult for me and was afraid I wouldn't hold up as well as I should have, but miraculously, I did. It actually helped me to be there and was very calming in a way. The mood is quiet, but people seem to be doing the best they can. We met some crews on the aircraft to see how they were handling flying. Of course, many FAs are visibly shaken and upset and are taking advantage of the counselors we have available to them. Unfortunately, the pilots are a more subdued group, which doesn't surprise me. I just hope they take advantage of the resources that are available to them (CIRP reps are there as well). No one should go through this alone and keep their feelings bottled up. If they're too embarrassed to do it in person, there is a toll free number they can call and do it anonymously. If anyone on here needs the number, please PM me. Thanks!

Qgar Good for you for doing that, it is a sad time when something like this happens. It saddens us all. You are a good person for helping others in their time of need.

Take into consideration the differences in personality types though when situations like this occur.

Pilots are much more likely to analytically approach this situation, looking at & thinking about not only just the "loss" factor of their friends, but also the "what happened" side of it. They're dealing with it, just in their own way. Some personality types are much less "open" about their grief, even if they are working through it in a perfectly healthy way. They may have a few beers & laughs with each other talking about the good times and remembering their co-workers and talking about the mechanical specifics of the incident, instead of crying openly about it. Either way, they are getting their emotions out, even if it's not outwardly the same reaction as others.

The important thing is that everyone does work through it, and seek help if they need it. No matter if that help be sought privately, anonymously, or openly.

I feel sick to my gut.
Rebecca was a friend of mine in college.
Always had a big smile everytime you'd see her at the airport.
CWU Flight Dept. is a close niche family and you'd never think you'd see your own fall.
God bless them all and thier families.

i've never wanted to kill someone until now..

link

I pulled this from his "Legal/Terms/TOS Page"

<edited to remove this person's address/phone number again.>
Not sure if that's his phone number or not, but I am pretty pissed! I understand where come people are coming from, saying just ignore him, but damn, I would love to do something about it. The guy is pretty much making liebelous statements, which isn't part of our first ammendment rights, as I understand it. I don't know, I could be wrong, but I can't see how his statements can be legal.

[modhat]Folks, I know this is an emotional time for all of us, but please refrain from posting personal information of other people on here. I know that info is available via the link, and if one chooses to click the link, fine, but do not go so far as to post the information in a thread. [/modhat]

His stuff about military pay, and the holocaust is pretty disgusting too. Avoid it lest you contemplate murder.

I had forgotten all about that clown until it was brought up here. He was on Fox News a while back (more than a year ago) discussing the death of military members and I honestly think that I would have whacked him if given the chance...but over time I forgot about him...but NO...there he is again.

If I was ever diagnosed with a terminal illness, I might make a trip up to NJ for a brief visit.

Sorry about that MQAAord. I thought since it was posted on his website it was pretty much public knowledge, and thus ok. Won't happen again.

Wow.... just wow. He obviously knows nothing of what was going through the crews mind as they were dealing with this catastrophy. The comments he makes in response to reader comments are worse. "The female FO sounded way too amused by it all". Screw you! This is a good reason not to release tapes to the public.

:(

as an aside, I hope hope hope that the CVR isn't made public.

I know how you mean here. But truthfully, I don't think any of us know what was going through the crew's mind at that time, CVR or not; most especially him.

Yeah sorry I phrased it badly. I don't and will never claim to know what might have been on someone elses mind as they were dealing with a situation. It really really bothers me that there's some arrogant dirtbag out there that essentially thinks he knows anything. But to come to the conclusions he has come to purely off of what is in the media reports so far? Irresponsible, low, inhuman, evil. Those are the words that come to mind.

I really need something to do today. All I can think of is refreshing this thread on JC, read my company forum, and try to keep the news off. I haven't been outside my room yet and it's 2 PM.

Back to topic, I think it's worthwhile to post that if anyone wants to help out, please go to the ALPA Emergency Relief Fund: https://www.alpa.org/Default.aspx?tabid=2991

It's on the other thread, but for those of you running through this one, keep it in mind.

The transcript will be released, but the law was changed a number of years ago to prohibit releasing the actual audio itself.

As [I think] it should be.

I think there's a LOT to learn from accidents that happen, and for us to study the transcripts & the readings from the FDRs is a great learning experience. But on a human level, I do not find any value in the sensationalism of hearing the actual recordings of people's "last words".

MOO (My Opinion Only)

No, no...I wasn't slamming you by any means. What I was meaning was that if we who do the same kind of work and understand the situation(s) similar to what this crew was facing...if we couldn't possibly know what was running through their minds; then how possibly could the author of the piece even remotely know? Thats all I was trying to mean by my post.

Just my opinion so take it as that...

If you posted that blog link or quoted/replied to that link and it appears in your post, it might be prudent to edit/delete the link. We don't need to feed that "person's" ego by giving him hits. He gets off on being inflammatory and getting people riled-up.

The thoughts and discussions here on JC have no correlation to that blog and should not be tainted by it.

I agree that feeding that individual's "ego" by giving him attention in any way is totally counterproductive. People like that feed off of attention, any attention. Not giving them any attention at all is the best way to deal with people like that.

If someone chooses to leave the link in their post, that is their own choice. As it is also one's choice whether or not to click the link. I have not read it myself, but I understand it to be highly inflammatory and I simply choose not to engage my mind in that sort of crap.

We haven't removed the links, just the physically posted address/phone numbers, because the site that it's linked to isn't pornographic, a spam/sales pitch or containing obscene language. I understand that it is a highly contentious site, so please keep that in mind before clicking.

It is what it is. Its like television......turn to a channel; if you like what you see, watch it; if you don't, change the channel. But censoring what people watch...esp a link that, as MQAA said isn't porn or anything......isn't right. We're all adults. It'd be no different than how the AF treats us at some overseas bases with the BS they come up with.

RIP to all involved...it's really great to see that all of us have an outlet to grieve amongst friends here at JC...I know a couple guys and gals at Colgan and glad to see they are ok. This is really a sad incident...makes us understand that every day IS a gift and we should cherish what we have when we have it. :(
