Non-Union airlines..

You rip on a guy because he helps clean his airplane?
Do you look down on me because I unload my Lear?
Netjets pilot clean their planes and gasp unload bags.

Helping with bags and such is part of being a corporate/fractional pilot. Airlines are different. Airlines are supposed to have cabin cleaners to clean airplanes, but when boot-licking BlewDudes will do it themselves, the airline doesn't have to. Air line pilots shouldn't be picking up trash, throwing bags, or pushing wheel chairs. The airlines have employees that are supposed to do those jobs. I do my job to the very best of my ability, but I'll be damned if I'm going to go into the back of the airplane and pick up after somebody else's kids.

Interesting how one's opinions are so easily blasted by the non-union carriers' folks on here. I definately hope that they achieve ALPA or any union for that matter. I am all for it and will do my part to help. Like said, it's sad that Colgan fell short by 4 votes. It doesn't take years and years, as some proclaim, to understand and appreciate what a union negotiatied contract does for a company. Is it fact that someone has to be an old salty pilot to appreciate it? You're foolish to think so. The non-union pilots deserve ALPA/union plain and simple. In my short time as a 121 pilot, its obvious the difference when talking with pilots of non-union carriers and even with some ALPA carrier pilots on the differences.

Guys who believe unions aren't worth it, are the ones who think they're better off without it or somehow they wont benefit from being unionized. It's the industry as a whole, IMO, that gets shafted. Just open your eyes and see the differences. It's obvious from just local observations. Glad to see that some here think it takes 10 years of flying for both union and non-union to see and ultimately decide which side of the fence you stand on or how you feel about it. Smittey, as for talking about this or that in the crew room? Go on.. tell us all how a union at Colgan wouldn't benefit you directly since you seem to take such offense to the whole notion that non-union airlines, not pilots mind you although directly responsible for unionizing, offer no benefit vs. union.

Let me go pray in the wilderness, do some soul searching, climb a mountain in Tibet, run like Forrest Gump, eat bat guano and then I'll try to reaffirm my thoughts on the subject. Unbelievable...

Ya, all this coming from a person with previous cold feelings towards unions.

Do you hope that Colgan goes under?

Quit getting over emotional.

No person in their right mind wants anyone to get kicked to the curb. Would you see it as fair though for a non-union airline who pays their people dirt, offers no benefits, and terminates you at the drop of a hat to charge customers less resulting in an "under cutting" of the unions' efforts and actually resulting in the union carrier going under?

Colgan would be a great place to work if they had a great contract. You can't argue with that.

Damn... That's twice now in a week I've had to agree with Chris.

I'd type out a whole bunch of stuff but the internet in this hotel wasn't working until about 10 minutes ago and I show in 20 more minutes (after sitting here for the last 15 hours).

Later I guess.

How would a union help Colgan? Where do I start? Job protection, legally-binding agreement with management, a leg to stand on when we want something. The list goes on and on.

I am NOT anti-union. I'm extremely PRO-union. I'm much more PRO-union than I am PRO-ALPA. What I do have a problem with is people like you kicking non-union carriers to the curb, and verbally insulting them on a public forum. You haven't experienced Colgan, you just read Saaborowski on APC and take it for fact probably. We will be ALPA next August and I hope this "Colgan Sucks" crap is put to rest. I know there are a lot of people here working hard for us. We have an AMAZING pilot group who doesn't deserve the category we get placed in...which is the "bottom feeding scum operation". And I'm not saying you said that.

But please stop this- "Colgan is non-union, therefore they're worthless and their pilots are pukes". We ARE trying. And I would be VERY EXTREMELY SURPRISED BORDERLINE SUICIDAL if ALPA doesn't pass next August.

FedEx? I guess a little history lesson is indicated.

FedEx in their non-Union days LOVED to hire ex-military guys. Why? Because they were generally politically conservative and anti-Union.

So why am I not surprised Fins has dredged up some of the slugs who are unhappy that their purple "non-Union" paradise unionized.

Wow. It's amazing to me that you know my friends, their histories, views and all that. How doooo you do it? As far as avoiding questions you don't like...well that's just too easy a target.

yes, u were dave. little shorter than me, shades, black hair. spikey in the beginning if i remember correctly.

i used to fly the hell outa maine with kevin lackie which is who u spend ur first 40 or so hours with out of IOE right?

Right on man. Not really spikey hair, just the front so I don't have bangs. :D

Kevin Lackie....I like that guy man. We had some good times flying when I first got on line. Getting stuck in ITH with a gear problem, making 25+ trips to the toilet cuz we got sick! It was funny. I heard you went to a certain other prop carrier as a street Captain? Good for you man, best of luck!

Merit,

Your opinion is not being blasted, its the manner in which you boast this opinion and with what little backround and experience you have. Let it be known, that I too have little backround and experience in this business, and as such, I don't boast my opinions on the state of the industry and Unions on an internet forum and fight to death to defend them. I have my opinions, and from time to time I will share them, but dude, you go way overboard.

Non-Union Airlines SUCK. Yeah, easy to say when you don't work for one. I can sit here and say "ExpressJet sucks! Their branded flying will tank and all hope will be lost!". But come on, I can't make that statement because I don't work for XJT and I'm not an industry expert. Besides, I would never make that statement because I have respect for the pilots at XJT and wish them the best.

Do you see what I'm getting at? Not just this thread, but you've been posting lately a bunch of crap about the industry and this and that throughout the forum. Good to see that you are enthusiastic, but maybe rather then litter the boards with such rash opinions and theories, just sit back and learn.

Just my .02 cents.

wish i could harness all this energy you guys have and direct it squarely at management.

its good to blow off steam, but we are beating a dead horse and its time to have a beer and call it good.
