Check out this old video from 1965:
It's actually pretty neat. They show inside the "dispatch office". They even show the use of AIRINC. I had no idea that they used that way back then! It's corny, but neat to see how things were back then and how much things have progressed. :)
 
Back then?? Some airlines still use ARINC (or other radio providers) for that today. It's considered a back up most the time but I've used an ARINC phone patch at least once in the last 5 years. Me previous career it was primary communication means.

I used one at Ryan not that long ago... And it is a means of back up there. CORRECTION: was... :(
