Mid-Air Collision near LGB

I was out in LGB a few weeks ago. We departed LBG at about 7 pm for the quick hop to SAN. During that 20 minute flight, the TCAS was the most saturated that I have ever seen. It was quite uncomfortable, yet amazing at the same time; SOCAL ATC really knows how to push tin

People always talk about a how the east coast airspace is complex. Having spent a lot of time in both, I don't believe the east coast airspace has anything on the Southern Cal airspace!

RIP to the pilots. It's probably a moot point but as of right now it's 5 am. I find it very hard to believe that after more than 12 hours of the crash they still don't know who or where the plane came from. Are there any missing Cessna in the socal area, flight school operators????????????? The lack of investigation from all the local news is also puzzling. You'd think people would tend to notice an airplane that didn't return or family member than never made it back from their practice flight today.....

There was another mid air back in 2001. The media was beating down the door of the flight school as well as calling the owner of the aircraft. It was incredible how heartless they were just to get a story. I don't think they could understand that the people they were harrasing had just lost some very dear friends.

I'm sure it is known who it was by the family, FAA/NTSB and the operator, but I'd bet a press release or leak is the last thing they need to deal with after loosing close ones. When it is important for the peanut gallery to find out who it was it will be made public. Until they, lets let things work themselves out. My thoughts are with all who are involved with this.

Socal has a very busy and complex airspace arrangement. At least 6 airports use that practice are and for the most part all of the local schools are VERY good about using the CTAF frequencies and cooperating with each other. Unfortunately there is still enough people who use this area and refuse to participate on the published frequencies. I was on with Socal during the accident and was very impressed with the speed at which they got things arranged. Anytime there is an accident in the area there is a law enforcement/rescue aircraft on scene in less than 10 minutes. A few years ago there was a plane with some issues who reported he was landing on a beach, Long Beach PD/LA Sheriff beat him to the beach and reported that "there's nothing here" the reply was "I've not landed yet!"

For the record the accident didn't involve anybody from the Long Beach Flying Club or A & E Flying Club. Those are the only 2 operators I keep track of.

Hey Cody! Happy to hear it wasn't anyone at the club. Sad to hear it happened at all, however. That area is way too congested at times. I've had 4 close calls in the practice area and one in the pattern for 25R.

This is certainly sad news but it doesn't surprise me that this happened. Truely a sad day for many people.

thats it for me!!

I almost got hit here before (by the horse shoe). No one ever talks on freq in this practice area.

I'm gonna suck it up and just take the mini route up to the other practice area. This is absurd. 2 mid-airs already within what? 5 years?

RIP to those aboard

I guess we don't know who's planes they were yet?

Very, VERY sad. That place is a mess, combine aerobatic practice with all sorts of ground ref maneuvers, along with all types of pilots doing aerial maneuvers for training, and socal busy with airline traffic that ALSO goes right through that area - LGB and some LAX departures - and you have yourself a mess of a piece of airspace.

Didn't they have a freq assigned specifically to that airspace? As I remember hardly anybody ever used it. I doubt that area will get any less busy in the future, keep your eyes peeled out there... see and avoid is tough when you're in 3 dimensions and closure speeds are nearly 300 mph..

Yes. It's 121.95. A lot of people didn't talk on it at all or not enough. I gave reports whenever I changed position more than half mile while doing manuevers or even while passing through. I actually had one fellow CFI approach me at the place I use to work at and the told me I talked too much on the practice area freq and it was annoying. Considering the volume of traffic out there I find it necessary to give position reports often since people come and go so frequently in that area.

Maybe we have one of these as a back up, just in case.

FWIW, some people havn't looked at a Sectional or TAC in so long, that they have no idea that the areas even exist. I teach people in the Simi/Santa Clarita practice ares, and the Santa Paula Aero box all the time. Most people just come ripping through there in their Mooney, SR22 and 400's at full speed and just don't care enough to even make a position report. Did no one teach these people how to manage two radios at once?

For all of us who instruct in the LA area, keep your eyes outside the airplane, and make frequent position reports. When you get haggled by a co-worker about talking too much, PUNCH 'EM IN THE FACE. And tell them to let you know when they are out in the practice area, so you can go fly somewhere else.

RIP fella's. God Speed.

That's the area I flew to the most. It's no where near as busy as the basin practice areas but it can get congested at times. Ultimately SoCal is busy in most areas and we all need to be careful.
