That's some busy airspace right there. Amflight would have a few Chieftains running between San Diego and Burbank every day not too long after it sounds like this crash took place. It was amazing looking around at night and seeing just how much traffic was out there.

I was airborne just after it happened. Within about 15 minutes there were at least 7 aircraft on scene searching for the wreckage; two sheriff helicopters, LGB PD, a Coast Guard helicopter, and at least 2 fixed wings, and the aircraft that witnessed it. Several boats were also heading out to search. Unfortunately the seas were rough and there was a strong wind causing wind waves, making search and rescue difficult. Fog was also moving easterly onto the search location. From listening to the report from the witness pilot it didn't sound good. All of the aircraft from my school, The Long Beach Flying Club, are accounted for. My thoughts are with those involved. Well done for the witnessing pilot, he handled it very well reported it quickly, stayed on scene over the site and helped arrange the rescue aircraft quickly.

This is the second time this has happened in the last couple of years. I believe the incident a couple of years ago involved 2 cessnas. Right over the breakwater is where everyone practices their VFR manuevers. RIP to those who were involved today.

When I started instructing out there, that was one of two main practice areas we were supposed to use, both of which were always busy. After about 2 trips to that area, I figured out that it was just a matter of time before you hit someone out there...

I then started taking my students up over the SNA airspace and south into the southern part of the OC over Mission Viejo and that area south of El Toro... It took a little while to get down there but it was far safer and I think my students were far more experienced for it as each lesson was like a real flight they would take instead of a quick trip to the practice area to dodge other aircraft.

It ticked off the flight school and I caught some flak for it, but safety was my game.

Anyone know what school these planes were from?

I instructed in SoCal. And the LGB practice/airspace area is a disaster that has been waiting to happen. It is way to small and hard to spot airplanes.
Dana Point is not nearly as busy as LGB.

Wow, that really sucks. I'm in the area at least once a week. You know there's a lot of people in that area, but sometimes you don't hear anyone talking so it's kinda scary whenever you're practicing out there....

I'm sure even if I looked outside a lot, it could have still been me... Definitely an eye opener...

I hate to hear about that stuff. Hard to listen to that ATC clip. Keep your eyes open up there guys...

I hope they find survivors, but I think we all know how highly unlikely that will be at this point.
 
RIP to the pilots. It's probably a moot point but as of right now it's 5 am. I find it very hard to believe that after more than 12 hours of the crash they still don't know who or where the plane came from. Are there any missing Cessna in the socal area, flight school operators?????????????:rolleyes: The lack of investigation from all the local news is also puzzling. You'd think people would tend to notice an airplane that didn't return or family member than never made it back from their practice flight today.....
 
I was out in LGB a few weeks ago. We departed LBG at about 7 pm for the quick hop to SAN. During that 20 minute flight, the TCAS was the most saturated that I have ever seen. It was quite uncomfortable, yet amazing at the same time; SOCAL ATC really knows how to push tin
