Captain Positions Offered to New Hires

Family Airlines has been amazing to work for. I mean, we never got that 747 but we're running low, family-friendly fares between Las Vegas and all major US cities. Parents with carseats ALWAYS board first and we're going to have in-flight meals for all flights. Are you looking for a ground floor-level investment opportunity with sweet sweet upside potential?

But keep doing what you’re doing.
exactly

2015:"we'd never deign you could fly a jet at our company, we're the highest and most professional pilots the world has ever seen! come back when you magically acquire crew time at your largely single pilot job."

2023, apparently: "can you finish fogging this partially fogged mirror? here, I'll get it started for you!"

Hire 'em all and let OE sort 'em out!

I mean, you laugh, but.... yeah, lol. The market has changed immeasurably since 2014/2015 or so.

I remember being told in 2014 that I wasn't qualified for a job as a copilot in a charter Beech Jet when I had 4,000 hours, about 1000 MTPIC, and was working in management.

"But does he have crew time?!" Uhh, yeah he does! "But is it crew jet time?" Well, no, it's not. "See, not ready for us!"

I threw in an app at UPS several years ago as soon as I met the minimum qualifications on the site (degree preferred). I think the rejection email came before I even hit the submit button. Exaggerating, but I believe it was actually within 10 minutes.
JetBlue Airways was the same way, circa 2014; I think I hit submit and about 10 min later came the "no u" message. My, how the turntables or whatever.

You have been getting interviews at AS and WN. I wonder if you need to have someone look at your app for UA and DL. There could be a gotcha in your app that it preventing it from actually being seen. I know this because I have gone over apps with people and I have seen all but one get an interview not long after. I wouldn't pay $200+ for some hack to look at your app and tell you basic info (that was my experience). Get someone you trust to give it a hard look and to even help with verbiage about your checkride failures and such.
I can (and do) do this for free and on the regular, simply because I dislike the snake-oil firms that much. I don't have snake-oil to sell, but I can at least check spelling, grammar, look for obvious errors, polish that cannonball, etc.

I’d offer the anecdote that there’s a certain major I had an app in with for 7+ years, reviewed, updated, and never heard so much of a peep from them, yet I’ve heard of people getting CJOs there with incomplete apps. Sometimes it happens.
A certain AAirline does this at the risk of having to march people into the principal's office when the background reveals something different than the application. I mean, hypothetically...(also the immunity is in the statute, for the 10,000th time).

I will never recommend an app service. I would offer (and do as well) my services long before getting to that point as well. When I made that mistake I was told two things.

You need to be consistent with addresses. For example having one say "Road" but another say Dr. Is inconsistent. Either have them all abbreviated or written out. I doubt they really care in HR.

The other was "you need to make your job descriptions better." No hints or ideas to make them better. They just told me something I already knew. Fixing them was a reason I hired them.

The experience was a complete waste of time and money. Also funny story. I never fixed my job descriptions and had one without a job description.

It really seems incredibly stupid telling someone what your job entails when it is essentially the exact job you are applying for at their company. How many different ways can you explain that you take people and things from A to B?

My description of this job says “flying a 767-400 a little bit of north, south, east, and west,” because I was out of words.

I did use a resume review but honestly no idea if it actually did anything. Got the job tho 🤷‍♂️

It all seems like common sense but people swear by these services. When I recently heard how much people were spending in prep (1-2K) my jaw dropped. For whomever it get the job I guess it was drop in the bucket.

I had people tell me I needed to buy prep so that when I get an interview I will be ready. Of course many years past before I finally got an interview. I did not buy a prep service till I had an interview lined up and I wouldn't recommend buying till you have an interview set up.

I found Emerald Coast to work for me. The best benefits from the service was getting my initial life story worked out and listening to others talk about their experiences. It helped me jog my memories and even realize a lot of my best stories can fit in multiple buckets for questions and scenarios.

Of course if I didn't get hired they offered a full refund. I figured it was a low risk investment at that point.

As far as interview prep, my interview prep was working 6 weeks straight including the last 4 weeks on nights, except for one night I took off because we lost a beloved pet. I figure either they were desperate, or they weren’t lying when they said they wanted us to just be ourselves because at that point there was no mental bandwidth left to put on an interview persona.

I didn’t prep for it either, people put so much weight into what they look like on paper then show up to interviews like robots. I just showed up, smiled, talked to everyone I could and told them my story, the good, the bad and what I’ve learned so far in life as a pilot and a human. Seemed to work, and it didn’t feel like I faked my way into a job either. If I’m myself, and a company doesn’t want me then it’s best for both of us. As hard as it is to see all that potential money on the table walk away.
