Everything I've seen thus far suggests a frankly commendable and heroic effort by the pilots to keep the airplane pointed somewhere they actually wanted to point it.

According to the sources, the missile was fired at Flight 8432 during drone air activity above Grozny, and the shrapnel hit the passengers and cabin crew as it exploded next to the aircraft mid-flight.

Granted it's a one sided report from the Azerbaijan government, but it fits Russian MO, and is especially damning if true that they were denied landing.

If this is true. I want to know what SAM system it was that wasn’t m able to hit a non-maneuvering airliner aircraft and had to rely on its prox fuze for detonation.

Ukraine has opened a new can of worms when it comes to war tactics with drones. Other nations and factions will adopt this type of warfare. One day it will bite us in the ass.

Another possibility, like what happened when the Ukrainians shot down an airliner a few years ago, was the missile lost its target (perhaps it got intercepted by another) and then re-locked onto the airliner. In the Ukrainian incident, the airliner was like 150 miles away from the exercise area but the missile still got it.
