A pilot has been indicted for allegedly threatening to shoot the captain if the flight was diverted

If it comes down to the door being open with multiple psychos with box cutters coming into the cockpit to dissect me and mr FFDO blasting a few rounds off resulting in me being deaf, or them actually being able to reach me but I retain my hearing? I’m going for the first option every day. I doubt one hears much decapitated.

That’s what I call the FFDO justification. You’re not gonna have psychos with boxcutters. That was done 9/11.

Since 9/11 you have psychos sitting next to you - locking you out and crashing the plane, or pulling fire handles, or threatening to shoot you for diverting.

It’s amazing. The pro-cockpit gunner side continues to cite the one case of 9/11 while completely ignoring the FAR more likely insider threat.

This all really bums me out. I went to FFDO training recently. I really like the program. I do think the program is valuable. I used to be a skeptical about the program before going to training and I do admit that. Most likely due to one pilot at SkyWest out of ORD who let me know he was an FFDO by telling me he was “strapped”.

I try and follow instructions exactly. I’d never ever do anything close to what was mentioned here. It’s super embarrassing. None of the things mentioned here are part of the program. That really sucks. Honestly if an FFDO makes you uncomfortable call the TSA. I don’t want them in the program.

I also came here to say I had so much fun wearing my DAI lanyard during FFDO training and turning out to be one of the better shots in the class. That was very satisfying.

If anything I leave my house earlier and drive slower now that I’m an FFDO. The very last thing I’d want to do is show my badge to a WA State trooper. And describe why I have it and why I’m doing what I’m doing. No thanks. I would expect zero professional courtesy or even respect. I try and behave in the most respectful manner possible but I am not an LEO.

Honestly I think this discussion should be more about pilot mental health. I can only imagine what’s coming next month on Pilot Mental Health Bingo:

Bro. Every range I’ve ever been to has required eye and ear protection. I’m assuming for liability purposes, FFDO training is the same. So you defend and fire off rounds, and I fly? Are we just gonna assume I actually have hearing left after you pop off a couple rounds just 18 inches from my ear? In a small enclosed environment where sound waves reverberate?

Noise cancelling headset, bro! Enjoy the show!

All of one week of shooting and now here’s a badge. Go defend the skies.

And the recurrent training? Going to some special range where you’re seated in a mock cockpit? Nah? Just your standard gun range shooting paper targets like the rest of us lowly gun pukes?

I don’t mean to make fun of you, rather, the FFDO program. What a joke.

All I can say is sorry you feel that way. More details is SSI I'm guessing. I'd only encourage you to take the course and I'd be genuinely shocked if you didn't change your mind. You could always withdraw from the program if you didn't feel it was safe.

Because in a lot of ways I felt the same way as you, before the class. Just not so outspoken.

No way. I have a CCW and have zero desire to be FFDO. Not gonna lug a weapon around at work. Not to mention, the amount of international I do and god forbid I forget one day and take the gun to Mexico.

No thanks

I can all but guarantee that you do not have a CCW in Los Angeles county. It’s EXCEPTIONALLY rare.

Unless Bugs Bunny took a saw and cut Torrance out of LA county and relocated it to Texas, I most certainly do have a CCW here :)

It’s not rare. Bruen changed everything. May issue is now shall issue, as long as you meet the CA hoops you have to go through. Training course, a police department interview, LiveScan DOJ background, etc.

The worst they’re adding now is character references. That’s BS. Should go away. I shouldn’t have someone else needing to vouch for me, in order to excercise a right.

Of course, all a moot point. SB2 prohibits conceal carry in any establishment unless that establishment has a “guns allowed” sign (which no one is gonna put signs up for). That’s CA’s loose interpretation of “sensitive area.” Complete BS to apply it like that, but hey, it’s California.

Expecting lawsuits and an eventual overturn. Will take years though, best guess.

Good news I guess. It’s half the reason I moved down the street to Orange County years ago

If I were carrying in my personal life I'd definitely want the FFDO training. Be safe out there.

Honestly the only time I ever said "gee I wish I were an FFDO" was on a Houston overnight when someone started trying to kick my door down at 2:30am.

Security arrived and it turned out they were drunk and had the right room number, but the wrong hotel.

My plan was to brain them with the end table as they came in and hope it killed them because I wouldn't get a second shot at it. Thank goodness security was fast and the door was sturdy.

Really kind of a bad reason, though, if you think about it.

I can't tell you why but being an FFDO wouldn't help in that situation. It would be more of a liability, if anything else.

My response was to your post worrying about your hearing. If shots are being fired, you have a massive issue going on, your hearing will be just fine.
