Flown with lots of FFDOs almost all of which were fine.
The only really weird ones were the ones who said anything other than "oh I'm an FFDO by the way."
Only one made me wonder about him and he gave me a whole detailed briefing about what he was going to do with his gun should the need arise and made sure to tell me that my safety meant nothing to him and that I'd better stay out of his way.

I've flown with two, and only one of those was actually exercising the duties/carrying. Like you said, it was "I'm an FFDO btw". I agree that it seems like a somewhat silly program that probably had more to do with appearances in the immediately post 9/11 era when everyone was freaked out. That being said, I wouldn't fault someone for doing it for one of the other perks that comes along with it (not sure if I can mention what, I don't want to go to SSI prison 
)

This is largely my problem. I’m 42 and know how crappy I am at call of duty with my middle aged reflexes. I’m not entirely confident the 62 year old sitting next to is going is going to mount a flight deck defense that doesn’t involve sending a shot through my throat

Eh... That's a risk anytime anyone pulls the trigger and most of them out there carrying have way less credentials.
CCW is far more dangerous, IMO.

Sigh. I had one of those. Loved it. Unfortunately, mine had the clip in piece at the bottom which my toddler got a hood of and promptly hid it in a pocket dimension or something. None of the other 17 clippy lanyards I had would fit. So no pretty colors for me.
