Skywest Questions

Aroo? Was that a royal You?

That's not making much sense, but I hope that means you poured a few back in celebration. You think Skywest would have learned a few things from Horizon's missteps,, but it seems like these west coast regionals are run by idiots and by lowballing you guys they shot themselves in the foot. If I was in your shoes I'd unionize purely out of spite, regardless of how much sense it makes.

Oh I see what you're getting at.

Only time will tell, I think. In the meantime I go to work and fly my line, enjoy my overnights and try not to sweat it too much. The view out the window is good!

And only getting better in this job market.

Also I'm pretty sure Eugene Levy has never played a role model and his character's supposed to be a jackass in pretty much everything he plays. I didn't mean to sound like I shared his characters union bashing concerns as Skywest's management is doing their best to prove that their pilots could use one.

It makes quite a lot of sense.

Lol.

"For now, the company has indicated they are not interested in re-opening pay talks. They informed us that our voice was heard and that they had learned some lessons in the high block hours over the winter."

LOLOLOLOL.

"I actually had written an update saying, "Reserve Proffering notification fixed!" as I felt we were so close to a resolution to this issue. Unfortunately, at the 11th hour, the company decided to wait to sign the policy correction that was passed by SAPA at our monthly meeting."

Keep it up, the union crowd is growing.

Perfect time for ALPA to take advantage of this lull, and start an organization drive.
We will know more in a few weeks. In the conference call they said ALPA is having a meeting July 12th to discuss moving forward to the next step. Setting up the IT, website, and contact database. Our next conference call is July 16th, we'll know more then.

Remember all those guys who said that Skywest pilots have MORE leverage against the company because they're able to hold the threat of ALPA over the company's head?

LOLZ.

It's a joke. I've written to them, told them how it's not even legal to make my check my schedule a day before a RAP, nothing. SAPA can't do anything, all up to the company if they want to. It's the perfect example of why we representation. To decrease the reserve QOL in this climate is mind-boggling.

Anyone considering Skywest needs to pay attention to this attitude set forth by management and these QOL changes. I'm not sure what recruiters are telling prospective students? Are they still talking about the good ol days 10-15 years ago?

You could call the FAA.

You might not be employed after the company figures out what you did, but you could always call the FAA.

Sounds like I wasn't too far off. We turn down the pay amendment (which was good) and the company is pretty much saying "See, you guys said the last package was crappy yet you still want to keep it"

That's okay, let the new hires go somewhere else. With the growth in 175 and DFW flying it's going to get real thin here pretty fast.

This was the first weekend where I realized how bad it is as a captain. Obviously it's a weekend a lot of people want off but when I couldn't get rid of 3 days of a trip for $250 and other people couldn't with $500 it's bad news.

See, it really isn't about the pay at this point to me, it is important, but it has become clear SkyWest will do nothing, not a single thing, to improve or work with its employees. Expand Delta travel privileges, fix jumpseat issues? Nope. Commuter help, hotels, positive space deadheads from home to training events? Hard no. These cost little more than a bit of bargaining capital with mainline yet there is absolutely no effort made.

Further, to highlight their apparent attitude toward our contribution to success and respect company has toward us, is the proffering, new hire vote, and duty time adjustment debacles, among others.

It's as though they are pushing us to organize so they can play the typical "hamstrung by unions" excuse for their inevitable inability to deal with the changes coming to the regional side of the industry.

I'm a yes vote.

I'm not on probation, nor was I swayed by the (rather awful) presentations by the RJ or the company trying to sell it—if anything, they made me less inclined to vote for it.

However, let's get a few things clear: it's not "concessionary" (do you realize how insane that sounds?), nor is it a "pay cut."

Not everyone is at a regional just as a stepping stone to a major, despite the commonly-repeated statements to the contrary. I'm happy here—I fly with great people, on a plane I enjoy, and I experience -excellent- QOL. Am I paid fairly? No, of course not. Does the pay package fix that? No. However, the economic situation of the regional industry is quite complex, and my evaluation of the situation led me to believe that the pay package was relatively fair, all things considered; should the company have any trouble attracting or retaining pilots—that is, should we have any actual leverage—I have no doubt they'll be the first party wanting to come back to the table... at which point we can re-examine the situation.

Update, 2018 edition:

While I believe my rationale here was correct, I promised elsewhere to post here if it turned out I was wrong.

I was wrong.

I don't think a 'no' vote would have yielded better results at this point in time, but I believe our negotiating position would be stronger.

I don't regret my vote, as it was made using the best information I had available at the time, but I do concede that the company coming back to the table has not yet yielded the results I expected when I explained my "yes" vote.
