This was 6 plus years back when UAL had folks out on furlough.

United had (or has) an agreement with SkyW, where a furloughed UAL pilot could go and fly at SKYW without loosing their UAL senority. They would get second year RJ pay and once recalled would head back to UAL. SkyWest had to be hiring to do it. I flew with guys who had been out of aviation for several years, selling insurance or flying corporate or whatever. They simply missed the life and wanted to get back into the air. They were all excellent of course.

Yeah, I get that. But that sounds like an involuntary furlough.

You like the details Max and perhaps I should have clarified. :) ......Yes most were involuntary furloughs and I'm sure the UAL guys could clarify the details. Anyway this fellow was more senior and older, but told us had taken a VOLUNTARY furlough. He left aviation to pursue alternate forms of energy creation (we're talking perpetual energy or Arc reactor type stuff here). When, unsurprisingly, that didn't pan out, he went back into aviation and took advantage of the aforementioned program.

At the time I was on the Brasilia and the community was fairly small, therefore everyone got to know each other well. Plus you don't exactly forget a guy who goes a bit off the reservation with alien conspiracies.

There are always guys looking to take a few years off to pursue something new, and commonly a furlough will allow this to happen, as the majority of contracts require the company to ask for voluntary furloughs before kicking anyone to the curb involuntarily.

Guys who do this save jobs at the bottom of the list, and it commonly gives them the ability to pursue some other job or career that they already have on the side.

When XJT furloughed, it was voluntary furloughs and 40 hour flying lines that saved hundreds of furloughs at the bottom of the list.

I'm sorry but seriously the dumbest people ever get chances like this. It drives me crazy. And then he can still fly regional jets for OK pay because the perpetual motion machine didn't work.

I guess if I had a windfall of free time and the chance to start a second career I could try to develop gold bars from lead.

Certainly no harm, but why do this?
1. If picked, you'll be taking a slot away from another person who is qualified.
2. You'll be spending money on transportation & lodging (assuming you live out of the area) only to be told, "well, come back when you DO meet the mins!"

I can just about guarantee this will not be the last hiring event Southwest will host, and they'll be at all the job fairs too. Believe me, I understand wanting to go and getting your name out there, but just have a little patience. With the way things are going right now, we'll all get our shot.

BTW, how awesome would it be if we all banded together and NOBODY showed up. I want to live in that utopia.
 
Since you have to register for the event on the pilot credentials website, I would guess that if you don't have the mins it is unlikely you will get a slot. With that in mind I doubt it will hurt to try. Just my .02 worth....
 
@Lee D and @RMCBear08 thanks for the info and your thoughts! Looks like it's true that I can not register until I meet the mins on Pilotcredentials.com. Maybe next year, or sooner if mins are lowered.
 
Window is opening soon - anyone seeing that window open yet?

I've been refreshing the screen every hour since 3 am :/
