WN career fair 9/24

How many "Dear Dough, IMMA SEW YEW!" messages are in there?

Ha! Are we talking GX? Probably a million.

The true ballers actually mail a physical cease and desist, which is generally the opening volley. The 'amma sooo yooo" people generally don't know what the process actually is and are going to get a face full of "handle your own problems, son" when they ask pops for a favor.

The Feds, however, send the FBI.

An indicator that cockpit conversation isnt going to get much more cerebral than sports scores and reality tv?
Spare me. The possession or lack of possession of a degree is in no way, shape or form a measure of an individual's intellect or their ability to hold a meaningful conversation.

Just because you went to the Air Force Academy doesn't mean that you're the Neil De Grasse Tyson of intellect, but what a great and efficient way to display to an evaluator that he "shows up on time, performs in a workman-like manner and is probably one of your more exceptional candidates".

Even one of the big three with preferences for degrees (but not a basic requirement), out of several thousand hired, only a surprisingly small amount (like you can count and not run out of toes or fingers) have been hired with less than a bachelors degree.

On the topic, the big fight is legitimizing online degrees, but certain programs from particular programs because some are legit, some are legit-ish.

Don't shoot the messenger.

I get it and I'm not aiming at you personally but there are other methods to determine if someone "shows up on time" or "performs in a work-man like manor" like a previous work history perhaps. I didn't attend a 4 year school not because I was lazy or not smart enough. My parents split up, my mom may she rest in peace was sadly, out of her tree and my old man remarried, moved away and at 18 I'm out on my own. I had to keep a roof over my head, feed myself and educate myself, by myself. I worked at grocery store overnight stocking shelves but I knew I wanted better than that so I went to local community college during the day, threw freight at night and earned an A&P license then spent nearly 18 years working nights, weekends and holidays for the navy and then UAL. During that time I was not once "counseled" on my sick leave usage all the way up to my eventual lay off in 2005. When I decided to fly, I hustled through the ratings and taught for 4 years before landing my first 121 gig. Sounds pretty "work-man like" to me but since I don't have the all important degree I'm unhireable. Built a lot more character than spending 4 years at the bottom of a beer bong. Look, like I said, I get it It's the way the system currently works but just because "that's the way we've always done it" doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. A LOT of good pilots and even better people are being overlooked in a pool of rapidly shrinking applicants. In light of what your friend told you about OBAP it might be time to start thinking outside the box.

I appreciate your story.

I'd heavily suggest selling it in tightly wrapped package when you have the opportunity to talk to someone. Make it a "this is how I rose to conquer my personal challenges" in a quick, concise fashion.

Not related to the above but my friend got "talked at" for 25 minutes when he asked, "I'm not sure island flying in a (twin engine turboprop) between (two islands about 150 miles apart) is considered, technically, an oceanic crossing". The guy could have said something about navigation challenges, maybe some HF radio usage for flight following and navigation, but it was "Heavy drivers have autopilot, FMS and GPS and all I had was… and then one day… etc"

The ones that "prefer" over "require" give more credence to older career changers compared to the 20- early 30-somethings.

From over on APC: "Email today that said registration will be available on Pilot Credentials after Aug 22nd. 300 slots will be awarded."

Best of luck to those signing up, hope your ping pong ball gets pulled! :)

I've got a guy that is going to for sure point out UFOs to me on our next leg. Can't...wait...

Seriously.
Back at OO we had a fellow who flew with us as an FO for a time. He had taken a voluntary furlough from UAL. A nice guy, but all conversations were inevitably pulled into the realm of an X Files- esque topic matter. Good luck!

I couldn't tell you what the magic formula is for an invite. But in the present environment I think if a someone wants a shot at working here, and you have the minmums, there is a decent chance you'll get a call at some point. Keep your stuff updated.
