Maybe IT has changed since I left 4 years ago and AA/Envoy has moved into the 20th century and has a GUI interface to drop and trade trips.

Program called QUICKTRADE authored by a well.. now CA. He also does Eagle-quickbid.com so its all done with a swipe of the fingers. I'm sure he makes a pretty penny on these apps too since almost everyone uses them. (monthly sub for each)

Yeah that doesn't count since you cant prove the plane saw and printed the message. Plus nobody there is stupid enough to actually call even if they did see the message. If they want to JM you... they gotta find you or hope you slip up and answer the phone.
 
I cant wait to see the life sucked out of this kid as life at the regionals hit in full strength.
I don't know man, he commuted from North Dakota to Hawaii to fly a caravan for a weekend (like 8 legs a day nonetheless for probably a bag of chips and a sandwich) then back home to go to school for 5 days. He made it sound like that was a great lifestyle. He's going to make the regionals sound like you're working for a legacy.
 
At old Eagle, they’d send the crew coordinator to meet the plane at the jet bridge and tag the pilot when he or she got off the plane.

At Mesa, the crew coordinators waiting on the jet bridge to tag you didn’t have SIDA badges, so the pilots called the cops on them and waited until the cops took them away before getting off the aircraft. Or have the flight attendant hold off opening the door, do a quick costume change in a telephone booth, and just walk off the plane looking like a normal passenger right past the crew coordinator. Or just jump out the service door before the flight attendant opened the passenger door.

ASA got me once like that after an offline deadhead. Was waiting for my gate checked bag and “are you F/O Joe?”

I wasn’t even mad really, just shocked at the sudden display of competence.
 
I mean, seriously, what happened to blanket parties? I feel sorry for regional captains having to fly with these guys. They may have been 250 hour JetUniversity wonders in the right seat when I was an RJ captain, but at least they were semi-normal and didn't feel the need to post their douchy life story on YouTube around the clock.

I don't think so. First, mostly likely he wasn't actually jumpseating out to Hawaii, it was probably pre-arranged with all the airlines involved and traveled positive space. Second, I get that as a college kid this kinda weekend getaway sounds cool. But to undermine or write off pilot commutes as being worth it for beaches, sand, or Hawaii just does a disservice to the profession. Most nearly all pilots who commute do so out of necessity. Wives jobs established, kids in school (esp high school), being close to sick parents, business on the side they run that needs attention, etc. My NY base closed and I'll be based in LA. There is no way I would make a video that shows sunny beaches of LA, the Hollywood sign, etc, and say "worth the commute."

He's young, single, and has no attachments. He can go nearly anywhere in the world and have no problems - and probably have a blast doing so given his personality. But wait until a wife and kids come and see just how quickly priorities change. That being said, if he's starting at Envoy now at age (23?), he's going to be at AA at 30 or sooner and have a kick ass career. I think he's a bright kid and will do well in aviation no matter where he goes. I just don't think he sees the big picture of the piloting career at this moment. Things like, starting a GoFundME to buy a pilot a ticket so she can fly from mainland to Hawaii to interview at Mokulele.

Nearly everybody on the planet outside of pilots and flight attendants lives where they do out of necessity. This is the only profession where you have the (amazing privilege) of being able to get the job you want and travel there from nearly anywhere without having to sell your house/move your family/settle for a bad job market, etc etc. He's doing no "disservice to the profession", whatever that means. Is there some requirement I didn't know about that pilots have to be grumpy and un-pleasable, for their image?

This is true only to an extent. You can probably pretty much get just about any job you have qualifications for in the NYC area/metro/surrounding area. And living where you want, well, in MOST nearly all other jobs, your career is portable. If you don't like where you live, you can find your job at another place you are interested living in. If you lose one job in Florida, you may easily find another job in Florida doing the same thing you were doing and probably start at the same pay (if not even more). As a pilot, if I leave one airline to go join another, I basically start with ZERO all over again at the bottom of the seniority list. No other profession has such damnation for experience and portability.


And yeah, he's an outsider who basically just moonlighted on a 2,000+ mile commute and makes it sound like it's rainbows and sunshine. The reality is it just isn't. Up until now, he was a college student who basically part-timed for a crappy operator. He's a college kid and certainly does not (and is not) displaying what a real airline pilot job entails.

No but he chose not to move there, or quit and get a different job. I deleted my post because I knew it would cause ENDLESS “but what about...” posts, not worth it.

Not many careers can you just make a lateral move to any place you want and have the same job. Many are focused in very specific areas. I’m so glad I’m not limited to living in California for a tech job for example. Flying is about the only career where you have options, even if all of the options suck sometimes.
 
I commute because my base closed. Yep it sucks, still a choice. I could go to any number of other regionals, or maybe even a LCC if I really wanted to and probably delay my career. I don’t see how anybody can even make the argument that it’s not a choice though. Nobody has a gun to their head. Being in a career where you’re away from home 2/3 of the month was a choice in itself.
