Swayne coming to a 121 near you

No but he chose not to move there, or quit and get a different job. I deleted my post because I knew it would cause ENDLESS “but what about...” posts, not worth it.

Not many careers can you just make a lateral move to any place you want and have the same job. Many are focused in very specific areas. I’m so glad I’m not limited to living in California for a tech job for example. Flying is about the only career where you have options, even if all of the options suck sometimes.

What did your deleted post say?

You still didn't say anything about the lack of portability. Yes you can make a lateral move in most other fields and still have the same job. Not sure why you are stating otherwise. Yes, bases close. But in most other jobs, you can get another one relatively near where you are (assuming big city, as in pilot bases anyway), and you take your experience with you plus commensurate pay. In the airline world, I lose everything if I switch employers. You can have 25+ yrs at one company and if you start over at Delta, you're at the bottom of the list at 14,700 on reserve on the smallest equipment and basically starting your career all over again.

I commute because my base closed. Yep it sucks, still a choice. I could go to any number of other regionals, or maybe even a LCC if I really wanted to and probably delay my career. I don’t see how anybody can even make the argument that it’s not a choice though. Nobody has a gun to their head. Being in a career where you’re away from home 2/3 of the month was a choice in itself.

LOL. If that's the way you look at it then everything in life is a choice, right? Some guys want to stay married and keep a happy wife at home, so they commute. You'd say commuting "it's a choice!" but the reality is the guy's other option ends up in divorce. That's just one small example. MOST people who are grown up (as in married, kids, etc) have commitments and more likely to get 'stuck' somewhere as opposed to uprooting and moving. NO ONE commutes for the pleasure of it.

The lack of job portability is a major problem. No argument there. I just consider it kind of a separate issue that relates more to how the airline unions and contracts work. Whole other topic.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Everything in life is a choice. Now where did I say anybody commutes for the pleasure of it? The thing I took issue with was crapping on this Swayne Martin guy because he seems to like his life situation and his job. Does he have some obligation to act like it sucks just because other people aren't happy?

The difference is he's reaching to an audience without having the "been there, done that" badge to back up the statements and content of his videos. No, going from North Dakota to Hawaii isn't "worth the commute" with the pictures of beaches and sand as he displays. Admit it, his whole channel is one big Kool Aid factory. He's also too young/inexperienced in the industry to see what's wrong with his content, like starting a GoFundMe for a pilot applicant so she can fly out to Hawaii to interview at Mokulele.

I should have started a YouTube series through my career. People could have witnessed my first airline closing and my second airline letting me go for a missed commute and now flying for an airline that is about as negative on the line as I’ve ever seen. It would’ve been a hit! Probably wouldn’t help the “pilot shortage” situation at all though

I'm not attacking your opinions because of your age. I'm attacking your opinions because they're wrong. Your age is simply the likely reason for why you have a wrongheaded view...

A PBS special.

Opinions can’t be wrong? That’s news to me. So the weirdos on the Internet who have the opinion that the contrails you’re making are really you dumping chemicals into the atmosphere to control their minds: those opinions aren’t wrong? They’re just “different?”

I can tell you unequivocally that opinions can be wrong. My wife tells me all the time that I’m wrong when I give my opinion.:def:

It's that bad? Someone was telling me just a few months ago how upbeat and great it is over there. I didn't have much to say back, how would I know?

I am an FO 18 from the top in PDX right now. Flying with many senior CA’s and even FA’s that are very negative. I will say when I was GEG based, if felt like a different airline. PDX feels like you’re flying with all the jaded and beat down crews that may have been in turboprops a tad too long.

That's probably true at most regionals, save for some of the SLC kool-aid contingent.

I dunno man, at OO I don’t think I flew with a CA that was as negative as about 50% of the guys I fly with at QX. I was on the ERJ tho, I’m sure the tone is different on the CRJ

I cant wait to see the life sucked out of this kid as life at the regionals hit in full strength.
Won't happen. He will be making $70k first year (or so they say) with that AA flow in his back pocket. Maybe reserve for 3 months. And don't forget, WING MOUNTED ENGINES!

Hell, he may never leave the regionals.

Also, can’t say I’ve watched his videos but does he carry a backpack over his shoulder or wear aviators indoors? Inquiring minds would like to know.

It's taken a lot of the Skywest crew to figure out they're just another crappy regional. But from what I hear, they've mostly figured it out.

I was pretty frustrated at some days at SkyWest. But I don’t see the point in having a crappy attitude. As a captain, I think it’s your responsibility to keep that BS out of the cockpit and do your best to maintain a positive atmosphere. I learned that from flying with some of my favorite captains (@Lee D) for example. You’ve failed as a leader if you’re running a negative cockpit.

Is he high?
It's hard even to imagine what it must be like to get paired with someone like that.
He's got a kid?? Lord help the future.

I had to stop watching after two minutes. I was witness to a captain at my airline being pushed around in a wheel chair at a major airport while blasting music and snap chatting the entire ordeal. His legs are fine by the way. I just stood there shaking my head
