No but he chose not to move there, or quit and get a different job. I deleted my post because I knew it would cause ENDLESS “but what about...” posts, not worth it.
Not many careers can you just make a lateral move to any place you want and have the same job. Many are focused in very specific areas. I’m so glad I’m not limited to living in California for a tech job for example. Flying is about the only career where you have options, even if all of the options suck sometimes.
What did your deleted post say?
You still didn't say anything about the lack of portability. Yes you can make a lateral move in most other fields and still have the same job. Not sure why you are stating otherwise. Yes, bases close. But in most other jobs, you can get another one relatively near where you are (assuming big city, as in pilot bases anyway), and you take your experience with you plus commensurate pay. In the airline world, I lose everything if I switch employers. You can have 25+ yrs at one company and if you start over at Delta, you're at the bottom of the list at 14,700 on reserve on the smallest equipment and basically starting your career all over again.
I commute because my base closed. Yep it sucks, still a choice. I could go to any number of other regionals, or maybe even a LCC if I really wanted to and probably delay my career. I don’t see how anybody can even make the argument that it’s not a choice though. Nobody has a gun to their head. Being in a career where you’re away from home 2/3 of the month was a choice in itself.
LOL. If that's the way you look at it then everything in life is a choice, right? Some guys want to stay married and keep a happy wife at home, so they commute. You'd say commuting "it's a choice!" but the reality is the guy's other option ends up in divorce. That's just one small example. MOST people who are grown up (as in married, kids, etc) have commitments and more likely to get 'stuck' somewhere as opposed to uprooting and moving. NO ONE commutes for the pleasure of it.
