Spirit Furloughing

Unfortunately, this is a long time coming. Day 1 hour 1 of indoc at Spirit March 2012 I was proudly told "more people eat at McDonalds than Ruth Chris Steakhouse". Eh, ok what about revenue? No cargo, no mail contracts, no frequent flyer program to speak of.

A few months later during initial OE at my current place, I see them loading cargo and mail on the airplane. Then cargo pallets sitting at SFO ready to be loaded to places around the world, then an integrated frequent flyer program. The industry changed after 2008. While there was a brief opening for the ULCC's and they did OK during that, but as airlines are banks now with their own currencies, that opening has passed.

Best of luck to those at Spirit.

Ha! I remember meeting you at Airbus MIA, as a Feb ‘12 hire at VX when we were both at the facility for training. Sheesh how time flies! I can’t believe it’s been that long.

The Transportation Department has tentatively awarded room for five new daily long-haul flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport – including one from San Diego.

The department approved five of the nation’s biggest airlines while rejecting proposals from low-fare carriers.

You can't even be bothered to read the paragraph below to see why.

Reading is hard bro

"Articles are pointless"

Oh I read it. Dumb government doesn’t know Frontier operates up to 3x daily DEN-DCA?

“The department ruled that Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines weren’t eligible because Congress limited the contest to carriers that already operate flights at Reagan National.”

Oh my Seattle buddies will like that. Another city to tie on for a 3 day through SAN

Sad we have people hoping for a SAN base.

You are LA, have you seen the 0030L short call RAP? Ask yourself, if the earliest check in at LAX is 5am and short call is a 2:30 callout, shouldn’t the earliest RAP be a 230L RAP?

Yes, it should be. And before, that was the earliest RAP.

Why the change?

Simple.

0045L callout means a 315L show at LAX. And now the 2 hr limo ride to SAN, voila, you’re in SAN ready to cover any morning Hawaii or transcon flight (JFK, IAD, MCO, FLL, DCA, etc).

The 0045 RAP is just proof we won’t get a SAN base. It’s far cheaper to run one base in LA and then limo down LA reserves to SAN for coverage.

Yeah I am in the camp of it never happening as well. Is what it is

SAN base any day now I’m sure (insert gif of Lucy holding a football).

It seemed like there was a lot of SAN layovers in the November ANC pairings.
Be careful with those long SAN layovers, I learned the hard way that you become a de facto SAN reserve. At least the time and a half took some of the sting out of it.

Did you self notify that change as a line holder? Or was it a notification once reporting for duty after the layover? Just curious
It was waiting for me when I checked in for my 1 leg down from SFO. Of course I clicked through it only looking at the layovers and it took me until about halfway down to realize that my 19 hours had turned into a 12 hour day sleep.

Long, SAN, layover?? We only get the leftover scraps.
Down here I’m noticing that as we go later in the fall the trips are tending less productive. Great if you like 19-20 hour layovers to get out and about, but it does start to eat into days off after a while.

I haven't been in quite a while, but I much prefer the shortish layover, given the short stay crew hotel, convenience, and that it is really a nice upscale quiet place. Probably one of my top 5 hotels in the system actually.
The hotel we’ve been using since the Hilton strike is nice and has beach cruiser bicycles available but there’s construction across the street and I gotta believe that’s causing fatigue calls when they use it for a day sleep.
