Southwest tries to redecorate LGA tower

That’s a bio hazard. Not your fault if that flight leaves late.

Yes. I’m aware. It’s not my fault. And wouldn’t be my fault or concern in any way if I didn’t listen to the FAs and just let the customer complain about it after likely sitting in a urine covered seat.

I’m just using this as an example of why it’s good to show up early sometimes.

if the FOs arent empowered enough to make a judgment call on things of that nature, in the absence of a CA, then why have them at all

(besides the bleed panel)

I would have loved it if he helped the FAs but he showed up early and chose not to. 🤷‍♂️

I didn’t ask him about it.

For reference only and to avoid future posts about this he was years senior to me.

You know I don't jump on the Beat Up BEEEEEEF (tm) train, but *this* is a place where all the mentoring stuff you talk about would be incredibly appropriate, whether he was senior to you or not.

Not for nothing though, it boggles my mind that the FAs wouldn't prevent boarding when they had a biohazard in business class.

Trying to beat everyone to the plane and have everything done before anyone shows up isnt a plus in my book as a captain. It could be a signal to the others that I dont trust them to do anything. We used to have some wacko here that when youd show up, hed be strapped in already and sit there and watch your preflight flow. Wacko! Terrible tone right from the beginning. (He took an early out during COVID, and I am almost sure all of covid was worth it to rid outselves of this guy a couple years early :) ). I try to show up sometime before boarding starts so I have time to talk to all the FAs. I assume by this time the FO has arrived and done the walk around and the preflighting the inside. If they havent, It isnt a big deal. If they are going to be late Ill do all the preflighting duties time permitting.

The flip side of that is a guy we have (he may be retired by now actually), who would roll into the lounge to print paperwork (when we still did that) 5 minutes before the scheduled report time, hover over the FOs (who normally got there a bit earlier than report to print stuff out), and then would throw out everything they'd done and tell them not to work for free and to start over 1 minute AFTER report time.

The situation was quite frustrating at times. Why did the aircraft come out of maintenance like that? Etc.

To be honest it never occurred to me to ask the FO why he didn't help the FAs stop boarding and spin up the cleaning crew. It would have saved a little time. I guess I don't give people a hard time about things that can't be fixed.

This was the same guy who was wearing the incorrect pants and tie. His F's jar seemed a little empty to me and I was trying to keep CRM going throughout the trip.

In the absence of the Captain the First Officer is in command...right?
In theory. And most people will just be happy after they show up when you tell them what happened and what you did to fix it. But then there's the ones that go full on Greta style "HOW DARE YOU?" if you even raise a finger without running past them. Having encountered a few of those at our shop, I always tried to call/text or in some way contact the Captain before making an operational decision when they weren't there, unless it was super urgent.
