I was landing LGA around this time. Winds at 1000’ was 50kts right on the tail. Then 50kt crosswind at 500’ then down the runway at minimums. Luckily my FO made it in. If we didn’t I wasn’t gonna try another one.

Or think of it this way. 45 years ago you could have very easily flown into LGA on a 737. 45 years prior to that La Guardia had just been elected mayor and it wouldn’t be until over 5 years later in 1940 that Pan Am started flying into “LGA” with Boeing 314 flying boats.

Yup they do. Plus the ILS requires you to hand fly it. No autopilot coupled approaches to that runway. Can get pretty hairy. You earn your money on that one.

Oh I agree. Clear blue day it’s nothing. But on this day yes it was hairy.

They way they keep you in fast on this approach, coupled with a strong tail wind, followed up by windshear over the threshold, along with the shortish runway, does make it pretty challenging.

One of my favorite things to do up is tell @NovemberEcho "unable" when he asks me to do things that aren't very practical like keep my speed up with a 50kt tailwind. I bet it drives him nuts. He then goes with the delayed vectors and I yell "spend me baby!"
