He's probably on a gluten-free diet but doesn't have gluten sensitivity or Celiac.

Guys/Gals like that make me all itchy. Had one back in the day explain to me how his awesome business investment was a revolutionary "energy sink" that would save everyone %90 on their electric bills.

Fuzzy details got fuzzy when I asked for the details. Explained (at length) that thermodynamics doesn't really work that way...at all. He got all mad at me because "I was the problem, and not the solution".

Grumpy Dragon may be grumpy, but knows which end of the pencil works for math.

FLCH is largely "speed on pitch" for the most part. You want to climb/descend, it's full/idle thrust and the nose will pitch to maintain speed. Some airplanes have a "program" of sorts where it's a blend of "speed on pitch" rounding out the aggressiveness.

VS, in the most simple terms is a mode in which vertical speed is the utmost priority. It works well, is smooth and in many cases preferable, but will whip your black ass (sorry, I can only write in terms which I can relate with) if you use it incorrectly. If you command a 3000 fpm climb, it'll pitch for that and disregard airspeed. A mad dog in VS mode will gladly stall you in a climb or drive you through the red line in a descent. If you command a slight climb, the autothrust will edge forward a little to maintain speed and the reverse in a descent. BUT, you sure better be confident in what you're asking it to do.

We're largely arguing "technique" but on the internet, thanks to the way we roll politically, it's "A or B". I'm an "moderate" which means that I see the value AND the danger in both extremes.

Personally, at the risk of the Boeing and Douglas guys whipping my ass, I kiiiiiiiinda enjoy FPA (Flight Path Angle).

The big thing to remember is that autopilots are awesome! at doing exactly what you commanded it, right or wrong

AMARITE, @PeanuckleCRJ?

Spot on! I use a mix of open (FLCH) modes, managed (VNAV), V/S, and FPA. Each have their strong points and application. And sometimes to @ATN_Pilot 's sheer terror, it's allllll off. :)

I'm particuarly a fan of FPA on not quite idle descent paths for en route crossings. I'll set up the crossing, start down and engage FPA to guarantee the crossing, then recruise to the crossing altitude.

And more on topic- That CVR on first read seemed like an FO that was really weak.

The more I looked at it... the more he seemed sick of her shiite and was just trying to get through the day. She was happy hands and flying the airplane still when he was flying it.

And grabbing the airplane at about 30 feet then proceeding to wreck it 3 seconds later? Impressive!

Anyone who has flown the 737 knows that with flaps 40, where you pull the power is where that plane comes out of the sky. She pulled the thrust levers to idle on the FO at 100 feet! Holy moley...

The tone of voice would go a long way here. There's so much more in speech than words.

Either weak or simply "broke down" and we've all been there by micromanaging captains.

I want my FOs alert and unafraid to speak up if their spidey sense tingles and I try to brief that.

Yep! Setting the tone is 100% critical. It is a team environment and we are in it to win it.

I recently had an FO in the sim tell me that they had never asked for an extra look maneuver before, but I had set such a good tone that they felt comfortable asking for it. That is the best compliment I can imagine.

I've flown with captains that micromanage like that (as have most of us)... you just get sick of it.
