Southwest 345 Transcript from LGA

FiFi is any Airbus product.

FPA = Flight Path Angle indicator.

Close.

In the JungleBus, FPA is a vertical mode that you select.

FPR is a button that nobody uses that shows you the Flight Path Reference (I think I'm getting this acronym correct). This actually bring up an indicator on the attitude indicator that shows what flight path angle you're flying at.

FPV is Flight Path Vector, which shows your current flight path.

Makes for a cluttered PFD, but you've got lots of great info in front of you.

Of course, on the 727, you just used the TLAR method. That Looks About Right.

These days, I go with Derg's plan and do whatever is necessary to keep me as far away from the Circle of Doom as possible.

Yup, that's correct. The FPR line appears automagically on an ILS in the HUD. The HUD makes all the difference in the world. It isn't cluttered because it is so "zoomed in."

I'm flying with an anti-HUD guy right now. Doesn't trust VNAV either. Woo!

By the way, I must be going crazy (or someone said I was), because I could SWEAR that on takeoff that the HSI on the HUD moves up a bit on the display once you shallow the initial climb to FLCH 210 from V2. Help me out yo!

The guys that don't trust VNAV have never learned how VNAV works. Then they "try" to use it one day and they screw it up. That just reinforces their "VNAV is broken" attitude, and round they go...

As far as the HSI moving up, I've never heard that, but I've never asked either. I'll see what I can find out. The takeoff pitch target DOES move as you rotate, but that's fairly obvious. :)

It seems like it's "attached" if you will, to the pitch, almost like the display is decluttered because of the initial pitch attitude. Time to crack open FCOM Vol II and the L&S Guide :D

I wish we had HUD's. We've got the housing for the projectorss, but no projectors.

We also don't have auto brakes or auto land.

No auto-land for us. We shoot the CAT III as a hand flown approach because of the HUD. Apparently we had a choice, autoland or dual HUD, and we chose the latter.

The brakes are nice as a backup, but I don't use them much unless the runway is wet or short.

Flew with a captain who did all his climbs and descents in CWS. He also didn't use the autothrottles in the NG. I am not kidding. When we had a check airman getting a ride flying with us on the jumpseat he begrudgingly used VNAV and autothrottles so that he wouldn't get any crap for it. I will give him credit though, he was really good at using just CWS.

I've heard that was how it was done in the 200s. Change management is hard.

He's probably on a gluten-free diet but doesn't have gluten sensitivity or Celiac.
