Skywest Questions

Yeah, on the CRJ. To be honest I'd probably prefer to fly more than I have been on reserve. Of course I say that but not enough to put me on call first.
Call first is a feel-good switch that doesn’t do jack unless the bucket, duty-rest process yields more than one pilot available for the assignment (FYI, if you didn’t know already).

So are we keeping our surface when issued an ipad?

I think that the surface is technically yours to keep from day one. They had some pro rate way of paying for it if you left the company with it the first year they issued them.

If I am remembering things correctly they were never considered company issued for liability reasons. Say you were to download pirated movies onto it the company doesn’t want to be liable. So to avoid that I believe it was always “your” surface.

Yap no, I was wrong on this, I just looked up the policy. They are technically “issued”.

You can return the EFB in good condition no cost to you, or you can buy it from the company. Price is variable based on days from issuance. Looks very affordable if you want to keep the surface. If you have had it more than two years it is free...

But the policy was written and worded with the intent of you leaving the company, not company issuing new equipment. So I’m not sure. Maybe they will take them all back to St. George and have some intern from Dixie list them in eBay!

Yikes! I haven't even started class yet and I'm worried about the reserve shenanigans. I did my homework but skw was the best fit for now.

My advice is to not get too worked up on stuff you read on forums before you’ve even started.

I spent a lot of time on reserve at SkyWest, and honestly it was only after a year of it that I started to become frustrated. If you live in base, you’ll be fine. If you don’t, you’ll be off reserve very quickly.

The biggest issue with reserve is when you’re stuck on it. That will happen when you’re a CA or maybe if you’re an FO in a very senior base like SLC.

You punk kids and your complaining about reserve. Back in the day I was so proud to be flying anything equipped without a propeller and student pilot!

Do you know that this thing is pressurized?!
Did you know that it goes up to FL370!
Did you see how fast our groundspeed was!?
Isn't this all way more exciting that the decade of work it took me to even be eligible to apply for this job!
Wow, isn't it great that at $19.50/hr I have money in my checking account and they pay me again it two weeks!

Can I please please please sit reserve on my days off, maybe Ill get a chance to fly one of our very few CRJ 900s!

I think that reserve rules here, as well as QOL issues need an overhaul. They stuff crew support tries to do gets a little petty I agree. They are merely trying to make the airplanes go places on time, they don't really care who or how.
That being said please recognize that new hires have it really good these days compared to how it was probably for the last ten years. Again, this is not to say that things don't need fixing, because they do.

P.S. If the phone rings, and you don't recognize the caller, don't answer.

Voicemail, always. But make sure you have the internet somewhere, because these days there's no way you're calling them back and getting ahold of anybody within 10 minutes.

Doesn't matter, they'll call you on all your days off anyway to try to cover stuff :p

Had them sneakily do this and then try to "notify" me for a trip my first day.

They do it because people are dumb enough to answer the phone. If you don't answer they'll just move on down the list until they find someone who either wants to make the money or is a sucker for picking up.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the requirement is to call them back within 10 minutes, even if you are on hold for 15. That doesn’t mean your 2 hour callout resets, at least from what I have experienced.

Don’t have to call back. You have to acknowledge within 10 minutes of getting the call (1 hour in case of Long call) and you can do that online (provided the trip they gave is legal)

Yeah, I’m just talking about if you choose to call back versus getting on the internet (which is not a requirement). If I call back 30 seconds after a missed call and am on hold for 15 minutes for example- that’s not something you would get in trouble for. I didn’t see anywhere in the PPM mentioning having to have data/internet connection while on reserve (theoretical these days with smart phones but there are places in my city where I have good voice coverage and poor data).

Agreed. All they do is adjust your show time from the original call.
