Skywest Questions

After getting my badge and being activated for CASS, I went home every chance I got. I believe it took two weeks for that to happen. Go home it's good for you as other folks have mentioned, just play the commute conservatively.

Especially the latter half. If it means leaving a day early, that means you leave a day early.

Hey guys,

Went out to SLC last week and was offered a FO position. Offered any class from now until eternity. I am living at the beach flying night cargo now. The little lady wants to stay at the beach through most of the summer. Will it really make a big difference in the long run if I take a end of June or July class over a March or April class. I also get a $2200 bonus if I am at my current company May 31st..not too much but something to think about.

Well... I'm a CA based at home. I have friends in classes a couple months after me, and they are stuck commuting to reserve.

But some extra time at home with your lady is valuable too. Just wanted to share that yes, it can make a pretty big difference at times how soon you start class.

Also, if you go to Skywest now, you might not receive the $2200 from your current company, but you will receive $1200-1800 between March and May next year after second-year pay commences. And, as noted, seniority is huge when hiring is strong. Assuming Skywest provides lodging through training, you would not have to commute or move for a couple of months. These are all items to consider and balance with family life, etc., which is also significant.

I was offered a class in a week and a half, or in a month. I took the class a month out. That resulted in 3 months of commuting to reserve in FAT, the gem of the central valley. The airline game is musical chairs, you don't know when the music is going to stop, but when it does prepare to get comfortable wherever you are. Of course, YMMV...

There are three things to consider in delaying a class date.
1. Seniority
2. Seniority
3. Seniority

I spent 2 more months commuting because I was at the bottom of my class.

Seniority is weird, have a good attitude, fly planes.

Short sighted, if you know you're going to go there do it now. Plenty of time to live at the beach. Seniority is everything.

Take the first available class. I have almost 800 people below me by the time I hit the 1 year mark. That's an average of 67 pilots a month. If you wait 4 or 5 months that's 4 or 5 months longer you're stuck on first year pay, and that's at least 300 pilots ahead of you on the seniority list. That can make all the difference between getting a base for a very long time or getting it right away. Just to give you an idea of how much seniority matters. I got my base of choice right off of IOE. A friend of mine from class who lives in the same area is next down on the list from me. He had to commute to ORD for an extra month. I was the last guy to get in the base we both wanted getting out of IOE at the same time. Next, I've been holding a line the entire time. My friend next down on the list once he got into my base a month after I did, was on reserve a few months during the slow months while I held a line. Seniority matters, and if some how that didn't quite resonate, seniority matters. Of course my situation is one of many stories of where being senior just by one number can make a world of difference, in your case we're talking a few hundred numbers.... Think about if upgrade slows, or all the people in the base you want that will be senior to you... Oh by the way, seniority matters.

So that means I have more then 800 below me!! 8)

So let me get this straight...Seniority matters? : )

Last question. Just saw the vote at ExpressJet. Is there a major difference between SW and ExpressJet? I am from the Southeast, but was planning to move if I go to SW.

Big difference. Movement vs no movement, airplane deliveries vs no deliveries, good pilot morale vs low morale... Upgrade at Expressjet is about 3 years longer than at Skywest.

There was a guy who left expressjet in my Skywest class.

Ok yeah, just got done reading up. I think my brain is turning to mush trying to figure out which regional will be less crappy...I mean best! Think I'll just jump in and hope for the best...

How long is reserve at SKW? What about ExpressJet?
I know upgrades are long either way.

All the FOs I've flown with lately in MSP (our junior base) were only on reserve from the finish of IOE until the next bid period. For other bases it will vary a lot.

Depends on equipment too. I'm going on month 6 of reserve in ORD on the ERJ.
