You do not turn down a skw interview, specially not if you're in class with Mesa...

Now THIS is an interesting topic! Thoughts anyone (everyone)?

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Now I don't know too much about Mesa and why thay are not a good company to work for ...

However, I think training is quite hectic and like drinking out of a fire hose. So I can't imagine that he would have time to disappear for a day and interview at another company while missing CRJ training. Doing that may have risked being booted from the training program.

But if there is time, I'd do the interview just to increase the opportunities, esp since Skywest is a good company.

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

You can guess my feelings. I wouldn't leave the job I already had for a few reasons:

-You don't know who's feet you are stepping on when you drop everything and run to another company in the same industry. It shows how loyal you are. The wrong person might remember that and make sure your next interview goes poorly.

-You already have a job! And a job that's hard to get for that matter. Why risk POSSIBLY having a job when you DO now? It does not make sense to me. Yeah Mesa's contract sucks, but what if you leave Mesa and Skywest does not hire you. Congrats, you've screwed yourself twice.

-Mesa's contract WILL change, and if you're there long enough then you'll see that happen. Otherwise you are there for a few years, get some turbine time and move on.

I don't see any real appealing arguments for leaving a real job to take an interview.

Cheers

Correcto.

We all chase the 'brass rings', but don't chase them horizontally. Chase them vertically.

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Congrats, Omar! Now when people ask 'what do you do for a living now' at your reunion you can say 'im an airline pilot'..How does it feel to actually be one now?! 'grats again!

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Doug and the others are right. Or, put in the simplest possible terms ... my dad once told me, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

Food for thought ...

Congradulations Man
I heard a bunch of SkyWest flights today, I flew from PRC ( Prescott, AZ) to RDM (Redmond, OR) and back, it seemed like every other check in was from a SkyWest flight.

I wasn't suggesting for you to quit Mesa all together, but before turning SKW down, I would do everything in my power to try to go to that interview. We all know here it is perfectly acceptable to work something out with Mesa (be honest, tell them why you want a day off training), or call Skw, explain your situation, see if they can offer you the interview at a more convenient date.
It sounds to me like you just turned the interview down, without a fight. Imagine you get a day off from your training dept, take and pass the interview at Skw...
The airlines don't try to screw people, they have more important buisiness to work on. Talk to your chief pilot, I have seen that happen a few times. But be honest!

Actually, my good buddy is in a Mesa ground school. He wanted to be at SKYW for the looooongest time. He would have given his left testicle

for a crack at the interview. I called him last week, and he was telling me that its crazy. It's like getting your private week 1, your IFR rating week 2, and COM week 3. He also said that if SKYW offered him an interview today, he wouldn't take it. He said he was happy at MESA. I have to respect his opinion!

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Both ways are right !
If you're happy where you are...stay !!
If you want a shot at the interview : go for it.....as long as you don't go burnin' bridges.........be honest and tell the first one what you're doing !

Congrats on the job ! That's awesome !

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Congrats!! That interview is a tough one!

On the other topic:
IMO. I don't think that leaving your initial training to interview with another airline is a wise choice or feasible possibility. Even telling the truth in this situation would create serious distrust for the new hire on the part of the company. Besides, where would you find the time during training? And if you could leave for a day or two, you could get behind and need to take an even bigger drink from the proverbial fire hose of information that all new hires struggle to digest. If you are out of training and on reserve or a line that may be different. Even then, many airlines have training agreements with new hires that last one or two years. Taking that new job when the movement is a "lateral" one could cost $$$. Especially on a FO's 1st year pay.
