Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Congrats! Man you are pretty much where I'd like to be right now, but I got a ways to go yet. Enjoy yourself and give us updates. My ex instructor flies Emb-120's for SkyWest. Hey at least you get to come home at night if you fly in SoCal. Again congrats on nailing the job.

I got a call for an interview with skywest but unfortunately I was right in the middle of RJ ground school at mesa. I Had to decline the offer. I had wanted to work out of SLC eventually but I am based in phoenix and just finished G/S today so it worked out pretty well for me.

Am I hearing this right? you turned down an interview at Skw for what again????

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Way to go man!! I just finished IOE (Brasilia) myself. Now the REAL fun begins. First, get some sleep now, you'll need it later. Ground school is very intense. Drinking from a fire hose is an understatement. You should be getting a pre class EMB-120 study packet. Know those limitations/memory items cold, as they are 40% of the final exam. Make flash cards, that seems to be the best way to do it. You've also got a big advantage being a SkyWest employee, take advantage of it. See if you can find a pilot with some spare time to go over the SOP & Flows/checklists with you. If you can go in with some knowledge of that stuff you will have a HUGE head start. If you have any other questions feel free to email me swoodard@san.rr.com
once again congrats and good luck!!

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

He turned down a Skywest INTERVIEW when he had A JOB somewhere else.

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

I just got my packet and was assigned the EMB-120. I've already started with the flash cards. My class date will be in May! Yipeeeeee!

Yah know......it still hasn't sunk in!

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

Hey Mrivc, do you plan to instruct till May are you going to kick back and take it easy till then?

Re: Skywest\' newest First Officer!

What books do you use to study for the MECHANICAL TEST? I've been searching, but am not sure which one's cover the pulley questions, etc.

I've drastically scaled back the instructing for a few reasons.

#1- Don't wanna risk a violation

#2- Just wanna take time off and relax before ground school starts

#3-I've been working non stop for as long as I can remember. I"ve been in school full time and been working full time and been going thru my ratings full time for the past 3 years.

I'm also really studying a lot on Turbine engines since it was highly recommended to me by the interview staff so I have a leg up when I get to ground school.

I managed to snake a copy of the Brasilia POH and have been reading it for about two weeks. It's extremely detailed. I know that I won't learn everything on that airplane before ground school but my goal is to have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of it.

A few things for you guys to consider now!

Start saving money now because:

#1 when you prepare for the interview your gonna need at least three weeks off to prepare. That can be tough for some.

#2 Some airlines don't pay you while your attending training. That can mean going without pay for six weeks at some places. Ouch!

#3 First officer pay during your first year will be hard on you! If you start saving now, and have money to support your modest income, it won't be so bad!

Just some food for thought!

I studied a book put out by Air inc that consisted of Skywest quetions that might have been on the test. Turns out of the 20 questions on the test only about 5 of them were in that book. I also went to Barnes and Noble and checked out the ASVAB book. Its the 2003 edition and has about 3-4 questions in there in Chapter 3 that are on the test.

Nice going!

It is always a thrill to read an inspiring story as yours, that shows how a willingness to work hard, maintain attitude and keep perspective will pay off towards what you seek. That's what makes the difference between a Quest, and a Grind.

Thanks for the enthusiastic write up!
