Possible new FAA duty time rules...

Heres the problem. No one at my airline really wants this. We're not over worked or overly tired. A one size fits all approach is not the right thing to do here. I fly 2.5 hrs a day with an average of 13 hrs off M-F. I feel fine. Sure its the wrong side of the clock but I'm not complaining. I get 8 weeks of vacation this year. I don't want duty times to change. I don't want to work longer or make less. This is just pandering by politicians. If this was really a problem our system would not be as safe as it is and this problem would have been addressed and studied more than it has been.

How do you see more restrictive rest and duty rules causing you to work more?

This problem actually has been studied quite extensively outside of government circles. However, pressure from the ATA on the FAA has been the major reason we have seen no improvments. It's only now, after lives have been lost, that the true problem comes to light.

I'm sorry you won't be able to get NFL Sunday Ticket. However, sleep well at night knowing that thousands of pilots out there will be more rested and alert while flying your family across the country.

Well, for the companies that have negotiated rates there will continue to be mass furloughs. What have the trends been post 9/11 for pay? Down, right? And why is that with more and more people flying?
Most of the companies that fly freight do not have contracts. How many 135's have contracts? Pay in the 135/121 freight world will go down with an increase in required crew members.
Pay in 121 pax, if this passes, will never go up-though the cost of living will. Its a no brainer.

Interesting take. Appreciate it.

How do you envision mass furloughs when these companies will need increased staffing?

I also do not drink as much koolaid as some members here do and was just interested in some spirited debate which sometimes seems to be unable anytime its union related.

Well Baj, I actually think this thread was going well - up to this point.

No one is drinking any kool-aid right now. Some of us just asked some pointed questions and wanted you to expound on your original posts. Is that going against the "spirited debate" goal?

Come on man. . .let's hug it out.

This thread highlights why things like single-seniority-lists will never happen. We can't even support improving safety together...because someone might take a $60 hit in their paycheck.

Any one have a link to the schedule of the road shows?

The 11 remaining road shows are scheduled for the following cities:
July 30 – Dallas/Ft. Worth
July 30 – Chicago
August 4 – Seattle
August 6 – Minneapolis/St. Paul
August 6 – Atlanta
August 6 – Anchorage
August 20 – Miami/Ft. Lauderdale
August 20 – Denver
August 20 – St. Louis
August 27 – Las Vegas
August 27 – Boston
These meetings are closed to both the public and media to facilitate an open and honest exchange of best practices and recommendations. Each road show is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 2:00 p.m.

Looks like you need to be an active line pilot to attend and then sign up to get invited.

So, this is just for ALPA carriers, but they are in the process of rewriting the 135 duty times...without any input from 135 operators??? Interesting...

For the guys who might know, what's a rough estimate to when we can expect to see these changes take effect?

I will guarantee this won't happen. And if it does, pilot paychecks will suffer... nothing will ever work out right or fair for the pilots.

Why? You get paid by the minute. There will be less waiting and doing nothing for with better rest. Plus it would mean they would need more pilots.

I don't think it is only for ALPA as it is being put on by the FAA. You do need to go to the website to register. I would think that they would allow 135 pilots to attend if 135 is included in the rulemaking.

I was responding to your post:
Am I prepared for negative affects in my pay and days off? Yes.
...which I take to mean shorter duty days mean that to get the same amount of work out of a pilot the company will schedule more days of work per month meaning less time off. I for one don't like the idea of just getting my one day per week currently mandated.

Come on man. . .let's hug it out.

Ssssshhhh....how about a manly handshake instead?

Probably no effect at Southernjets as our contract exceeds the new proposed rules.

Ok, thanks for the info. With all the ALPA talk, I ASSumed it was an ALPA road show. I'll find out how to register and hit up the show down south.

Edit: well, I found the information. So, all of you attending are either Chief Pilots or Union Reps? Once again, I will go to my statement...how is it in any way beneficial for 135 ops if the only people there are the Chief Pilots? I'm going to try to get in anyways, but I doubt I will have much luck. We shall see...

I do?

I am getting paid the same whether I fly a bunch or fly a little.... because the company is smart enough to keep us under guarantee...

Because I get 15 to 17 days off per month right now by working trips that have long hard days (though decent rest between days). Restrict those long hard days and I will have to work more days in the month.

And then there are companies who have long hard days that go like this.... 16 hours of duty, 8 hours of flying, then first night, reduced rest 8 hours. Second day, 14 hours of duty with 6 hours of flying, an airport sit somewhere in there of 4 hours, then at your overnight, comp rest 10 hours. Day three, another 5 leg max duty odyssey with a reduced overnight to 8 hours; day 4, max duty again, then you have to drive or fly home.:insane:

Your are Skywest right?
With your work rules I think you see very few changes on the Bro side and almost no change on the Jet side.
