Pictures from the Ramp (November/Decemeber 2009)

N519AT

Ahh! This is how I change this!
Here are some pictures from the last two months. I got kind of lazy and didn't go through them until last night. As always, I do this for fun and there may be some imperfections in my photos. Comments/Complaints/Suggestions are always welcome. One thing I would like to note is that a lot of the shots are back lit. It's really hard in Toledo to get any good shots during winter because we're on the North side of the field with a east/west runway. Anytime it's nice outside, you're pretty much starring directly into the sun. So a lot of backlit shots take place. I just complain and move on.

One of the few pictures were I can get the exposure right to see both the outside and inside. Still trying to figure that out.

This thing was hell getting it in the hangar. They needed it in the hangar to work on the door, which refused to go up the previous day after pax had boarded for departure. We had to use deice fluid on the wheels, coupled with the help of a Port Authority broom truck, we finally got enough traction and momentum to get it in the hangar.

Excellent series. You did a great job dealing with the back-lighting.

I really like the composition of the Allegiant tails.

The only constructive criticism is the departing PC-12 shot; slow the shutter speed so you get a little prop blur.

I look forward to your pics every month. Great shots!

I don't know anything about Gulfstreams, so what are the handle things on the side of either seat? My Apache doesn't have them.:)

Nice shots! Once you figure out the trick for getting the exposure right for inside and outside, let me know!

Fill flash

And bounce it off the nice white ceilings that just about every aircraft has. Don't do direct flash, you'll get nasty white reflections off the glass.

Great pictures! Especially the f16s with the burners in the evening hours.

You're a genius... I'll try that out next flight... I've been struggling to expose both the inside and outside for some time.

It works best at dawn/dusk. If it's too bright outside, you'll blow out the outside view since most cameras can only sync the flash to 1/250 shutter speed. You could try a super narrow aperture, but it still may not turn out all that well.

Set your camera to spot metering, point it outside, adjust shutter speed and aperture until the light meter is centered (you want to expose for the outside view). Set the flash to E-TTL (or equivalent auto mode; I only know Canon lingo), tilt the flash head upward, and fire away.

Examples, which you may have seen before:

So do you need to have an external flash? On mine if I point the flash at the roof, I'll get a picture of the roof.
