Northwest Overshoot / Cert Action....

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

Would an airline pilot really use "heated argument" as an excuse for overshooting their destination? To me, this would seem like a sure way for them to lose their jobs. I smell knee jerk PR.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

I'd be surprised if they even spoke to the media.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

How long does it take to go 150 miles? 16 to 20 minutes maybe? (Depending on winds.) I'm oversimplifying all the variables but, if they were cruising at altitude they feasibly could have been in a heated discussion. One heck of a distraction to miss all the radio calls etc. . . must have been quite an argument.

Yeah but they were out of radio contact for over an hour...it wasn't just that last 20 mins of time after the airport.

Good thing they didn't run out of gas, this really could've been an absolute disaster.

don't forget the 100+ miles from tod.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

You Commercial guys/gals can fill me in here but is it really that easy to fall asleep while cruising at FL36?

I dare say it has happened to every pilot at one point or another. Comfortable chair, warm temps, full belly, quiet frequency, zzzzz.

This maybe a stupid assumption but fuel levels would become a concern with this correct?

I recall one pilot in a light twin who flew 2 hours into the Gulf of Mexico and woke up with 1 hour of fuel remaining.

Hmmm I did not know that.

Like I said I'm not weighing all the variables & I figured it was not as simple as that, but if they were chatting up a storm for the hour previous to arrival and had little speed restrictions in the decent, and throw in a few other links in a chain for the incident. . . . I'm saying maybe it could happen the way they said it did.

Alright I better stop speculating, I know better. :D Either way, glad everyone is OK.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

Now imagine if the word "Connection" was written on the planes in these last two incidents...

It would be breaking news on every channel, all regionals would be grounded, and all regional FO's would be waterboarded to see if they ever flew fatigued, tired, drowsy etc... :)

Well obviously these pilots were hired directly from a commuter and were not former military pilots.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

I hope they overslept and it's found out, it would certainly help with new rest rules...but wait, it's the FAA so probably not.

???

I guess they hit snooze one too many times.

Article on MSN says no one was launched.

Also funny how the MSN article quotes a passenger as saying "the plane was swarmed with police" and then like two paragraphs later says 2 police officers came on board. :whatever:

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

I also agree that if "Connection" had been written on the side of the plane this thread would be 8 pages discussing low timers and the lack of professionalism in regional cockpits. Now we got 2 incidents involving highly experienced mainline crews and nobody knows what to say because they can't throw the blame at low pay or inexperience.

Dare I say it, maybe the last two incidents should be an eye opener towards the TRUE safety threat in the industry, FATIGUE.

Its been said that being fatigued is much like being drunk.
Maybe Capt Renslow truly did know how to recover from a stall but was too fatigued to react correctly.
Maybe the Delta pilots truly did know to land on a runway but were too fatigued to do so
Maybe the DeltaWest pilots tried to stay awake but were too fatigued to do so.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

One quick side topic that I thought about when I first read the report...

I thought CVR's weren't allowed to be used for punitive measures. Since nothing and nobody was damaged during this flight, can the NTSB/company legally remove those and listen to them? Or is that just a contract deal through the unions to protect pilots from the company? What are the rules regarding those things?

Maybe another side topic, too. What authority does the NTSB have in a case like this, anyways? I can understand why the company and the FAA can do their own investigation, but I was under the impression that the NTSB doesn't get involved unless some metal is bent, or until a certificate action appeal.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

When I fly pipeline patrol, and I'm cruising around 100AGL, I can find myself trying to nod off.....Yes, it's that easy. Especially in a 2 person crew. One guy thinks the other guy's got it, he takes a quick nap, then the other guy nods off too. It can happen.

In my work its very easy to snooze off when its smooth. Anybody ever heard the mention of crew alerters like they have installed in train locos that sound every few minutes or seconds?

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

Ha! The local media is funny. "The aircraft over-ran the airport runway by 150 miles". Don't think many people would survive that one.

Re: DeltaWest Overshoots Destination....

"Didn't they notice when the freeway signs said "U Turn for Minneapolis International Airport?"

heh heh That reminds me...they weren't sleeping but a friend of mine on a dual instruction flight with his CFI...the twin landed itself...each thought the other had the controls.

It would tick me off to wake up to find the other was napping. :dunno:
