Don't know about turb. but the winds are screaming here in the midwest.. Is winter over yet?:bang:

I wouldn't mind if we got snow, but all we seem to get here is winds, and cold anymore.

Currently over North Dakota and heading to Allentown. Looks like it should be a fun ride after a 7 hour flight. When's the jet getting here?

600ft?! Heck, I can do that on calm days. I don't reckon it's extreme until I'm rolled over at least 130° with 2000 or more on the IVSI.

Would there ever be a situation where something like this would lead a 121 jet crew to stay in the FL180 to 230 range to avoid it? I mean for a flight that would otherwise cruise in the 30s?

Absolutely. I've planned flights that low and lower over pretty long distances just to avoid turbulence. Today was a bad day, especially with NY and DC Metros stopping departures and rerouting traffic because of turbulence. LGA was on an almost 2 hour long ground stop today because of it.

Much of last week the low sector (ZAN 8) over South East Alaska was filled with traffic avoiding severe turbulence at the higher flight levels.
