New GI Bill and Flight Training

Had a breakthrough the other day. Called and talked to the state certifying official in Minnesota and told me that they were sending out to the school that have flight training programs to return info back to them for approval. Apparently it's catching on now and just so happens that the school that I was looking at going to was at the top of the list that they want to get approved. 5 months later finally some relief.

I'm curious when they will send out the 2010-2011 maximum rates and also see how many states/schools caught on. Next, Utah Valley Univ. and others need to get their online degree programs wired so affiliated VA approved flight training centers across the U.S. can offer the flight training. That would really help out ALOT more veterans.

Maybe an idea Accessible Aviation should look at....

I met with the Veterans Affairs rep at our local college. We are looking at getting the flight training approved as part of an Engineering Degree, not part of an Aviation program. This way the student gets an Engineering Degree and the flight training.
In general, the State Approving Agency (which is not part of the VA), must approve the course as part of the IHL curriculum, then the VA approves it. It looks like the Flight Training is treated as a "Lab Fee" for the academic courses.
If anybody like the idea of an Engineering Degree plus the Flight Training, let me know. We are looking for some initial students for this Fall.

Hampton University here in Norfolk has a program. It is a work in progress but I am hoping that they get it together soon.

Does any body know of a college flight program in Florida or Utah that you can use a bell 206 for training from private-instrument-comm-cfi in? I went on the bell helicopter website
http://www.bellhelicopter.com/en/training/index.cfm?content=about/links.cfm
and it said that their was a program offered to receive a degree from Utah Valley State College. Has any one been to this school for aviation?

The reason I'm looking into the bell is because it is turbine time, I already have my private fixed wing with just over 200 hours. I made it to the end of the ifr training but I didn't take my check ride or written because of finances getting in the way. I have 28 months left of entitlement of the post9/11 bill and If they are going to pay 62,000 a term with three terms in a year, I might as well take the most expensive training available to me.

I'm going to contact bell tomorrow and see what they have to say about using the post9/11 bill for training.

I answered you over at this more appropriate forum:

Did anyone already have a decent amount of certificates (PPL, CPL, ATP, etc) and was able to still use the Post 9/11 Bill towards their degree and other ratings (CFI, CFII, MEI for both airplane and helo)? I am still waiting on answers from a few aviation school departments on how to handle my current ratings and still use my benefits.

Here is a list I have compiled of good options familiar with Post 9/11 GI Bill:

Central Oregon Community College - Bend, OR
Big Bend Community College - Moses Lake, WA
Salt Lake Community College - Salt Lake City, UT
Palm Beach State College - Lake Worth, FL
Embry Riddle - Prescott, AZ, Daytona Beach, FL
University of North Dakota - Grand Forks, ND
North West College of Aviation - Seattle, WA
Yavapai College - Prescott, AZ
Middle Tennessee State University - Murfreesboro, TN
Cochise College - Douglas, AZ
Chandler Gilbert Community College/UND Partnership - Phoenix, AZ
Aviator College - Ft. Pierce, FL
AIMS College - Greeley, CO
Portland Community College - Portland, OR
Indian Hills Community College - Ottumwa, Iowa
Westfield State College - Westfield, MA
Kansas State University (Big XII university)Salina campus does it as well. Sorry for the Necropost, but this is important for all post 911 vets. Any other schools should added...

H.R. 950 seems to be stalled out, pending a vote in the House. I've done some searches but can't seem to find out when its up for a vote.

Anyone have some better info on this?

As for HR 950, I did a search on the AUSA website and checked through my legislation emails from the same organization. I have seen it in the recent past, but nothing new. I will continue to research...

I hope it goes through...

I want to use my GI bill but I have to do it within 10 years, so "the sooner the better", as far as I'm concerned...

I would like to locate a private pilot program covered under VA somewhere close to the Philly PA area? I orginally started on my private pilot a few years back via Oklahoma State University in Stillwater OK, but ran low on funds after 20 hours. I can recommend their program, but I'm on the East Coast now.

Unless you have active duty time since 9/11/01 you are not eligible for the post-9/11 GI-Bill and the old GI-Bill will only cover 60% of pt 141 training after private.

The post 9/11 GI Bill is a better deal without a doubt. School Tution is covered, flight fees covered, and on top of all that you get a monthly housing allowance.

Now i know why. The new max tuition and fees list should be out for the up coming 10-11 school year. Im hoping California has a hell of a lot more than $2100 per term.
