New GI Bill and Flight Training

The only advice i would give is going to a school thats out of state but allows vets to pay in-state tuition. UND offers in-state for vets and they fees are enough to be covered by the VA. you really have to shop around and call schools because alot of them will offer more than what you think.

That is very informative. I didnt know some schools will off in-state tuition to veterans. Also, what do you mean when you say "schools.. will offer more than you think"?

What I ment when i said that is schools are willing to work with alot of students. Fees are a killer for students seeking aviation degrees. If you find a school you are interested in give them a call and tell them your a veteran and chances are they are willing to go an extra step in explaining things and offering things. I called ERAU Daytona Campus and told them I was interested and the VA rep talked to me for a while about the process and sent me alot of information. She was willing to send me the application for the yellow ribbon program. I know you had an issue with fee's covered by the GI bill in california, you should check with your school to see if the yellow ribbon program will cover it.
I am not attending ERAU daytona but i found a good program in Houston where im from that is covered by the GI Bill and its a 2 year college and that leaves me with some extra time for different degree.

Anybody know if serving in the ANG offers the full benefits of this bill and when you are elgible to start using it (does it have to be after service is completed)?

Must have 6 months -3 years of active duty service. Just being in the guard or reserves will not satisfy. Being recalled to ative duty for Afghanistan, for example, would count.

IIRC, your stipend is based on the zip code of the school you are attending, so yeah...

Since HR 950 seems to be stalled out, what's the best course of action? What schools in southern CA will I be able to use? Any options?

MSU and All Atps partnered up for a A.S or B.S in Airline Transport Pilot

This would be an online deal with training done at a ATPS training center anyone know if the Post 9/11 covers this?

From my experience, it often takes over a year and even close to two years for the VA to certify a school. You never now though, the new GI-Bill may be faster for approval.

If the parent university is already VA approved, and I suspect it is, then the program should be ready to go. It takes 2 years for a new flight school location to go from Provisional Part 141 to "full" Part 141. The VA cannot approve a provisional school for GI Bill. However, since ATPs already has GI Bill approved locations, I assume this should be good to go real quick. I hate to plug the competition but my intent with this thread is to help Vets! BTW, the Guard and Reserve get the old GI Bill thru the REAP program (Chapter 1607). Chapter 1607 can be used at approved Part 141 Flight Schools.

Does anyone know if you can be reimbursed for checkride and written exam fees? I took five checkrides while using Chap. 33 through Aviator College and paid out of pocket for them.

O.k. a lot of these schools do not advertise much, and always check with your community college, if they have one, I reccommend updating this. There are quite a few schools, and under ch 33 they cover every single expense. Some of them only cover most due to the limitations in your state, but have other programs to offset the costs, (ie. Texas hazelwood act, or yellow ribbon program) So check and double check, and only talk to the veteran qualified official at the school, everyone else has no idea about this, and its a GIANT thorn getting information sometimes. This was last updated on November 10, 2010. I love helping people so feel free to ask. BTW only chapter 30 is 60/40, as ch 33 cover 100% as long as it comes with a degree program from an ILH. I am aware that some FBO's are telling people it's BS as you can only get 60/40, this is NOT TRUE. post 9/11 will cover UP TO 100% depending on the individuals case. So check with the schools veteran representative. P.S. I love the new MGIB!!!-

College of the Sequoias is going through the approval process (and FINALLY making some headway) but they are not approved yet. There goal is by January 2011 plus they are only offering helicopter programs right now and it seems their airplane program is dead in the water.

BTW only chapter 30 is 60/40,
Actually thee are other chapters under the MGIB that pay 60/40. And the VA rep you call from the phone number on the VA website probably isn't as knowligible as they should be. If you deployed for more than a certain number of days as part of the Guard or Reserve in certain situations you qualify for the GI Bill where otherwise you would not have. it is worth researching your particular situation on the VA web site.

Those Reserve members that have signed up for six years receive GI Bill benefits under CH 1606. That has not changed from when I used it for my undergrad.

I'm working with my school VA rep to see what the Dec change to the GI Bill means. The blogs seem to think the Post 9/11 GI Bill will be able to be used like the old one at all Part 141 schools. Anyone got some insight?

FFI, I have no new insight but have read some confusing articles from an advocacy group. Something to the effect of $10,000 or one year’s benefit whichever is less. I will search for that article and post it when I find it. The net is slow here today, (Christmas) so it may be tomorrow or Monday before I can get to it. It stands a chance but it was also tagged in the bill as "if funds are available" or something to that effect. Also, it will not go into law until Aug 2011.

Merry Christmas,
Shane

Changes to the Post 9/11 GI Bill will allow it to be used for technical training (i.e....Part 141 flight schools) starting Aug 2011!

Here's my FL 290 version:

-Covers 100% of tuition up to $17,500 per year for 36 months for private institutions
-E-5 with dependents housing allowance paid to vets studying full time
-$1000 per year book allowance
-Can be used for certification tests with some limitations

Bottom line: if you're a vet or Active duty, you can now shop around for more flight schools. Start your training (or even consider pausing your training if you're currently using Montgomery) after Aug 2011.
