Life at Compass

I wasn't able to catch the whole response to the question asked about SkyWest performance in LAX vs ours, but basically they made it sound like they run a much smaller operation out there than we do. I always thought they had a pretty big CRJ operation out west and now DL ERJs..

I couldn't phone in on the call, but I wonder if people addressed some of the concepts/details on the initial memo, and how it all offered very little to no actual explanations.

It was quoted that CPZ "...was a Midwest and east coast-based airline" :
Yes, we know we know...MSP MSP MSP...so many people love their MSP.
But "east coast based"? Nah. DTW, while "Detroit Mich-a-gan-o-waahhh eastern time zone and U must NO Dat", fell into that time zone-it wasn't an east coast "base". It was just another additional Midwest base. DTW, being closer to the east coast, did help support these seasonal changes, but like every season of flying-it will always be at DL's will of where they push the flying and to who.
There were many seasons that we had crews fly "focus city" work- the biggest ones that I've been a part of were the summer of DCA to FL routes and another large uptick of LGA flying that was after the DCA season.
We are certainly more west coast now since the initial LAX work that started up 3 years ago, which led to a base obviously......but trying to sell us on the "we were never a east coast focus", just seems kind of a cop out answer.

And streamlining the E170 fleet?
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Really? That difficult from a technical standpoint? This is the only type of plane CPZ has ever been responsible for. EVER.
They are not trying to run multiple a/c types at one company (Like CRJ and Embraer operators do at others).
Its literally VARIANTS that we have. E170/E175/E175 EWT. That's it.
That would be like my last company moaning and groaning about operating the CRJ-100/200/700/900.....oh the horror.
If MX is having a hard time with the same kind of plane, that sounds like a whole other laundry list of questions.

What I would like to know is the actual contract conditions of these 6 planes.
Why or why not/metrics, or some actual hard explanation, that shows the reason they are leaving.
Was their a geographic fence in said contract? I don't know. But I remember times that the E-170 wasn't allowed into LAX due to its <76 seating capacity arrangement. Which later disappeared. Which meant the plane for the most part stayed in the Midwest, back to the first statements.....the planes have been there on the east coast/Midwest all along for the most part.

Do feel free to fill in the blanks for me everyone, I've been busy outside of work and may have missed these things.

I would suspect since the contract was technically expired for them Delta is using this as a shot across the bow as it seems CP has been struggling lately. Just a hunch. With that said those things were garbage.

This thread has gone depressing real fast. Hope that changes soon for you guys. Got a lot of buddies over there.

FO's that bypassed to enjoy their seniority for a few months longer are probably kicking themselves. My guess is 3-4 months of no upgrades perhaps longer.

I'm in that boat of being juuuuust short on time and I've been bypassed for about 9 months now, heh. I was planning on a Feb class. Somebody asked on the call though and they only said "slowed", not cancelled. I think we'll still see some feb spots, hopefully, depending on what attrition does. If it ends up being later, meh, whatever. But they only need to shrink by maybe 30 CA, and that's in Feb, April, June. Attrition would take care of that well before June, I'd think. It's a little disappointing if I have to wait until April, but that's still better than, you know, seven years somewhere.

The only guys who intentionally bypass upgrade when they have the time and seniority to hold it at a regional are kids who have never seen a downturn. They think the good times will never stop and are sorely mistaken.

I honestly get conflicted about it personally. I'm very close to upgrading, but it will likely mean going back on reserve with 11 days off. As a line-holding FO I'll have more days off and schedule flexibility and make pretty close to the same amount of money. My days off are important to me for various reasons, but I also don't want to miss the upgrade. It is a tough call.

Or guys in their 40's who fly locals and have 15 to twenty days off and don't want to commute across the country for upgrade. I've got a kid at home who needs to know his dad. Also taking first upgrade would lock me out of being home-based for at least a year. Not gonna happen.

Most of us have kids at home... but do you want to be where you are the rest of your career or move on? I think not upgrading is doing a disservice to your family if you want to move up the career ladder IMO. Never turn down an upgrade at a regional. I'm not trying to single you out either.

Sorry. I disagree. QOL is everything to me. Speaking in absolutes is silly in any industry. The upgrade at home will be available soon enough. If not, oh well. I would do something else before choosing to be an absentee father. I laughed out loud at you thinking you know what is or is not a disservice to my family.

He is giving you good advice. To each their own, but I always love hearing people at SkyWest preach to me about QOL and delaying their upgrade, since it will let me upgrade quicker and escape the regionals.

By the way kudos on spelling out lol :D

I find it funny that you think you know what good advice is as it relates to my or anyone else's situation. I'm not preaching to anyone. Just pointing out that everyone has different priorities.
