How bad is it that this was the first thing my wife, a non-pilot, texted me? If she can recognize that if the aircraft is still intact, it didn't cartwheel, then CNN must be aiming for a pretty low standard.
I'm fairly certain I was the last departure before they closed the airport. One of our pax saw it happen. We switched to departure right before everything happened so we didn't know until the FA dinged us. Crazy. I hope everyone survives.

Not applicable to this situation, but I've seen 1/2Mi, and 100 OVC with 40kts in Kodiak... it was so weird and I still don't understand what precipitated that sort of weather.
It's called Kodiak. Physics don't apply.
