Jet career's ski trip?

I might be setting myself up for a flamin' here, but though many of us enjoy a beer or two or twelve, we can get together for some skiing, flying talk, cards, Halo, and fun times WITHOUT having to have alcohol around, right? I have no problem with drinking or not drinking, but certainly hope it isn't REQUIRED in order to enjoy ourselves.

LOL...no need to flame. I know that this certainly isn't a very politically correct thing to say, but on a vacation, I prefer to drink alcohol, and it's usually more fun to me......

Not because of the alcohol, but because If I'm not "allowed" to drink, I feel like a little boy sightseeing with my aunt Mary...lol.

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

My vote is for tahoe. Rooms are cheap in Reno and in South Lake Tahoe. Heavenly has a gondola that leaves from the casinos in south lake tahoe, with an awesome view of the lake might I add. Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Sierra at Tahoe, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, and Mt. Rose are all within an hour of Reno/S. Lake tahoe. Heavenly has 4800 acres and 3500' vertical plus the best snowmaking system in the west!

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

i vote cheap...I like SLC because i found a plane ticket for under $300 there.

and since i'd rather spend my $$ carving up the slopes, any place we can cut corners would be ok with me

ditto!! doesn't mean I'll drink - but means I'll have the opportunity should I choose to have a glass of something...I do without drinking everyday of the week (most times) because i'm on a "work" schedule... on vaca - it's just different and i can give myself the "me" treatment I need/want.. same with coffee - I use it as a treat... on vaca - i treat myself more!!

no reason to flame or be flamed on this one!!

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

I like a glass of wine myself from time to time. However, if a group of us were to take up Corbin and Michelle on their gracious offer, it would be appropriate, as their guests, to abide by the rules of their house. However, perhaps we'd need to arrange a "hospitality tent" or something like that.

P.S.: After skiing in France last winter, I've become a big fan of the apres ski vin chaud ... now if only I knew how to make it! And if you don't know what vin chaud is, you're not really living!

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

If people want a little more freedom you can look into cabins located at the various resorts. Divide up the cost enough ways and it's not too expensive.

As for my situation, I live in a house with 3 other roommates, all return missionaries (they still haven't converted me!). Don't worry they're all very chill. Nobody drinks alcohol but they do swear, drink caffine, some actually look at naughty pictures - omgwtf!? Most stay busy with work and school so I doubt you would even see them. There's a decent amount of floor space here but it is 4 college kids living in a house so it's not the cleanest of place.

I can also tentatively offer space at my parents house (have to ask to be sure). There's 6,000sq ft to go around and the only people that live there now are both my parents and my brother, who happens to be a ski instructor at Brighton. Everyone in the family drinks so feel free, there's a pool table, ping pong table, TV's, etc and lots of room.

I'll try to find out for sure about my parents and maybe take some pics of the two places so you know what you're getting yourself into.

Come for the skiing, stay for the Halo!

...and I'll take you on that bet!

Missed, you're on! By then, HALO 2 might even be out . . .

And I have a few friends who wouldn't dream of going anywhere that alcohol isn't served. Just wondered what kind of crowd we had here. Not trying to play Mr. Goody-goody, I swear! After all, I did bet a case of beer. (And actually, drinking HALO can be brutal. You die? You drink!)

Aside from the fact that the lake effect produced by the Great Salt Lake is actually the best snowmaking system in the west, that Heavenly has to brag about their snowmaking abilities is proof of how bad their natural snow sucks. Snowmaking gear at the Utah resorts is an "in case of emergency, break glass" sort of thing. Most places shut em off and purge the water lines after the first 36" accumulate.

And the "rooms are cheap" is relative to California, not Utah. After the build-up for the Olympics, vacation accommodations in SLC are extremely plentiful...and you all know from Econ what that means for prices.

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

It looks like that if I am going to come out for this trip I best brush up on my use of Sarge.

Anyhow... I'm not sure how many days people were planning on, but I think it would work best centered around a weekend. So here are the one's that I would like to see put to a vote.

Feb 21/22
Feb 28/29
Mar 6/7

I would think at two full days of skiing would be the minimum that would make the trip worth while (the great company not included

), so I guess a Friday or Monday would be included in there. Thoughts people?

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

As far as the bar/club things goes. You can usually buy a temp membership to the tune of $5 then sponsor up to 4 or 5 people. So a $1 cover charge once divided...

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

I thought the ONLY things to drink were beer and coffee. I guess that's only in my world...

Re: Jet career\'s ski trip?

WOW, I am just a few days and there is a ski trip, so cool! I just got home from an amazing trip with a C182 out to Vail for the World Cup downhills. (The best part was my buddy won on Friday!) We ended up in Vegas last night out running that front moving through, fun. Fun aside from the 40 knot head winds last night and today!

Anyway, I am biased to SLC. Actually Telluride works for me too. Szluka, you and I can go whenever it you want. (That’s my hometown for the past thirteen years.) Where ever we ski here would be fine with me. I would also gladly spend time with anyone how needs ski lessons. Doug, you get the first one!

As few things to consider:

Utah is extremely cheap as the ski world goes. It also, as it was said before, has the best snow anywhere. If you come during spring break the deals will not be as abundant though. That is the time that everyone else has the same idea. I would recommend staying in town (meaning SLC) where the rates are the cheapest. Staying up in the canyons is really nice but it is limiting in terms of nightlife and much more expensive. I too have some floor space but it is really limited. But who ever wanted to could crash here. Unfortunately I don’t have more than a one bedroom.

While the Tahoe basin may not have the consistent perfect powder that CO. and UT. delivers, there is plenty of world class boarding and skiing to be had. It is not uncommon for Tahoe to receive more than 30 feet of snowfall in a season.

[/ QUOTE ]Dude I'm a transplant; I spent the first 28 years of my life in Salt Lake, the next 6 in NorCal and the last 2 in SoCal. I know what I'm talking about and its a rare day indeed that the Tahoe resorts have snow anywhere near as good as Utah's. 30 feet of snowfall equals 360 inches. The annual average snowfall at the Utah resorts is 500 inches--that's almost 40% more--which means Utah beats Tahoe in the snow dept on both quality AND quantity. As for Mammoth and Big Bear, don't make me laugh.

There are some good resorts in CA; Squaw's a great hill, as is Alpine Meadows. But I'll take a day at the Bird or Brighton over either of those two 10 times out of 10.

But as far as clubs, from what I hear you have to be a member to get in, whether you want to drink or not.

[/ QUOTE ]

The last time I was in SLC, it was easy to get into the clubs. All you had to do is buy a temporary membership, which lasted for two weeks, for like $10. Then you could sponsor up to five people to go in with you.

It's been a while since I was in SLC, so someone correct me if things have changed.

No flame war from me. I like to have an adult beverage or two when I'm socializing. Now that doesn't mean that I don't respect those who choose to refrain. Just that I prefer to be able to sip on a cocktail when I'm out socializing.

And a couple of cocktails after skiing...just part of the tradition, man. I can't do it like the folks who live in ski towns can -- I won't forget the day after I decided to challenge one of the marketing managers at Vail Resorts to do shots with me -- but I do like to have a couple.

Absolutely, and I ain't talking the vodka brand.

It's their house, and if we want to take them up on their very gracious offer, we need to abide by their rules.

Nah, I don't think so. We could just hit the clubs and have some fun there. I had a lot of fun when I was there. And this will make you happy, FL270. I ran into so many UT students when I was there that I felt like I was in Austin with snow.

I sure as hell hope you're not an Aggie fan, or I just ruined Utah for you forever, huh?
