JC Cyclists.

bike21 I hope to be back on the trainer by this time next week. I have my first follow up appt with the surgeon on the 4th. Obviously nothing is official yet but he said if I am pain free by then getting on the trainer shouldn't be an issue.

I hope the recovery is going well. Speaking of getting back on the trainer, I was just recovering all of the my Sufferfest videos and also got a new one, There Is No Try. Do you have any other video training material that you like? I am pretty happy with the ones I have, but I'm always looking for anything new that will keep it interesting.

Hey PFH,
Sorry to hear about your accident. I have had two bad accidents in the last few years, one put me out on the couch for 3 months.which is making me skittish on my bike. Still try to ride though. Planning on doing a century soon to inspire (scare) me to ride more.

Good luck with your recovery.

Just gotta get out and do it man. I don't know that I will be as likely to race down a hill to catch up from ground lost on climb if I am not in an actual race in I haven't been on the route before but you can't let an accident shake you up like that. Its ok if you are jittery at first when you get on, that will fade, but you have to get out and ride.

I have only used the sufferfest videos a few times, my favorite are the spinerval videos. I find that they guide you through the same sets a paid coach would.

Thanks, I will have a look at those out. I like the Sufferfest videos quite a bit and just added two to my collection, so I probably have more than enough fodder for now. Looking forward to having a good quality indoor bike to train on.

Today's ride turned semi-epic with little notice. Good ol Colorado weather.

So I started looking at helmets again today, as I shattered mine in the crash. I have typically worn a Gyro helmet and really like the way the fit but I have a buddy of mine who is raving about LG helmets as they have a lifetime crash replacement policy. Anyone used their helmets before? What do you like and dislike about them?

I have used Giro for a long time also. My current helmet is not Giro and is not very comfortable. Giro just fits me better. They must be egg shaped.

Yep aiming for the 103 miler. I did a century before with only 6 weeks of training, but that was all flat. There is another one March 9th. Lets see if I can get ready for that one.

ahhh, you will be fine, just get lots of base miles in, not that you are looking for training advice but with the climbs in the century start working on keeping your cadence high on your rides. aim for 90 to 100 rpm, it will be hard at first but will be huge in your efficiency on the climbs.

My "team" signed up for the Shiner GASP first weekend in May. I haven't committed, since I can't guarantee the days off, but I am training with them. Half of them (myself included) haven't ridden a century yet. The training regimen is being written by a lady who is a tri coach and has run the genuine Hawaii Ironman. I am looking forward to it.

To one-up the weather picture above, I have to include this shot I took the other day in the middle of my perfect-Fort Worth, TX-February-day-50-miler. Coloradans, feel free to have me insert my foot in to my mouth in 6 months when it's 100 here and 70 there.

I am missing it man. Follow up appt today with the surgeon, xrays look great and the multiple pieces of bone that were in a different zip code two weeks ago are right where they should be :). I got cleared to get back on the trainer as long as I don't push it to hard (that will be easy since I can only sit upright) and start physical therapy tomorrow. I am really hoping I can beat the 12 week estimate to really get back on the bike and back to work by 3 or 4 weeks. I am sure going to try!

I am racing as a cat 4/5 for Village Volkswagen out of Chattanooga, TN, I can at least make myself useful and drive SAG on the team rides for the next few weeks.

My indoor bike arrived today and I have a buyer for my Kurt setup. Kind of expensive, but this will be a hec of an upgrade for my indoor training. Now I just need to get clear of the flu I have had for the last week plus so I can get to it.

Selling the Kurt? I love mine man! What kind do you have?

In other news I started PT today, for the next two weeks I will be working on passive stretches, using my right arm to move my left arm to stretch the shoulder in different directions. If any of you have had shoulder surgery to repair ligaments or your rotator cuff I am sure they are the same stretches. Therapists was surprised at my flexibility this soon after surgery, I hope that means I can stay ahead of the game and get back on the bike and back to work sooner. I do the stretches 3 times a day, and have another appt with the surgeon in 2 weeks, hopefully at that point I can begin working on strengthening exercises and not just ROM stretches.

More updates to come, may post pics when its all said and done.

I like the resistance the Kurt Road Machine gives, but with me being a big guy (6'4" & 205lbs), I never feel like I can get out of the saddle without beating the hec out of the frame I use on the trainer. I have never been comfortable with it in that regard, and I really like to be in and out of the saddle to keep my lower back happy. I decided to buy a commercial quality indoor bike to train on, and with that here the Kurt seemed better off sold to help pay for the new toy. The indoor bike really feels killer and I can throw anything at it. I know there are pro's and con's to going this route, but I think it is a good choice for me.

Glad to hear you are on to PT; I hope that goes well and quickly.
