International airline -> US bizjet transition

What is super strange in the EU is when fields have a tower… that is not actually a tower.

Like EKVG Vargar airport in Faroe Islands. It looks like a tower, it talks like a tower. They issue IFR clearances like a tower… but actually have no regulatory authority or control capability lol. Very strange telling tower you are taking off rather than being given a take off clearance.

Great Exuma, Bahamas (MYEF) is the same. Traffic advisories only but can facilitate clearances. In this example, the position is required for weather advisories since AWOS/ASOS is OTS and many carriers by regulation (121.101 & 135.213) require a human observer for field conditions (hot, dry, wet, wind…).

It is unusual, compared to what we see in the States but normal there. An example of a job that is safe from AI, I guess.

We used to have that at smaller airports in the states. Airport Advisories from your friendly local Flight Service Station. They could also pass on IFR clearances from ATC.

But only a 25% chance that the clearance would make it through to Miami Center. It was always a fun time when you got near the ADIZ on the way back home.

Sheesh. Has it been that long?

FSS consolidation was started in what, ‘86-87?

The irony is the old FSSes did the ATC clearance thing super well compared with today.

Semi similar but also not in that it’s compulsory - So you still have to talk to them, like you can’t taxi, take off or land without it and the field is closed when the “not tower” is closed. - and It’ls also slot controlled… by this same facility.

Vargar has requirements due to the surrounding terrain and mechanically induced sever turbulence in the fjords - so you’re also required to get the wind speeds off the local hill from them as well as the condition color.

All in all a very strange experience :)
