Hypothetically Speaking....

Shouldn’t you be busy buying beer for my friend smartass?

He did just brave this Species ending plague in nothing more than an M95 mask and latex gloves.

Put me in touch with him and I will. He's earned it.

It's not the Chinese interrogating crewmembers. But totally nothing to see here. We DID NOT go to mainland China. We went to Hong Kong, which airlines are still flying to. Hell, FedEx is still doing China flights for freight. All the deadheading crewmember did was ride an airline from Germany to Detroit and was interrogated.

Well, except all of the people we're bringing back, but yeah, nobody.

And crew that haven't been to mainland China in over a month are having the airplane held up, Captain PA to stay seated, and the crewmember deadheading (pax) gets escorted off the plane with contamination suits guys and interrogated. Totally normal for a cold. GTFOOH!!

That’s called HUMINT. What better way to confirm or deny conditions in a state with direct media control like China than 1st hand knowledge and in the case of what my buddy showed me even photographic evidence of the conditions on the ground. Any smart nation with an intelligence apparatus making a decision on health protocols would be stupid to not do that.

That being said, your implications of aircrew being quarantined are false both from your source and mine within the aircrews flying it. The medical procedures some on this thread have suggested as necessary are wholly above and beyond what is being practiced at the direction of the CDC. The end of times is not coming with this virus. If we went back in time to the SARS or HEMS or any other of the recent outbreaks the hysteria driving images of practiced procedures today would very much match the ones we did then.

So settle down, this will not be the opening 5 minutes of “The Stand.”

No, no, you're not changing what we first talked about. PEOPLE ARE BEING QUARANTINED. PERIOD. Full stop. You said "it's a cold, nobody's being quarantined," or something to that effect.

Crews, as far as I can tell, are not being quarantined, but that was not what you said. You said there's nobody being quarantined. Look at your own freaking words. All I'm saying is this isn't the common cold, and the things I'm seeing indicate the US government isn't taking it lightly. They are actively seeking us out. Yes, it's HUMINT when people have been there. When there's nothing to indicate a crewmember has been to a location, it's more than that.

Keep on keeping on with "it's just a cold or flu". Yes, the media is hyping it to get clicks...guess what, they do that every day. The fact that you still can't say yep, people are being quarantined, is par for the course.

Back to ignore. I should have never taken you off.

Well it's not flu. That's a different virus.

This virus is a variant of the type which causes common cold. Other variants caused SARS and MERS. So you could just as equally say that they are a cold, if based only on the virus type.

To base it on mortality, obviously the China numbers are junk. But reports from other countries match the statement from China that most people have nothing but minor symptoms. So like a cold.

Obviously people are being quarantined.

No you make a smart ass comment responding to the idea the CDC is somehow flying their own planes naming me directly then pretend like you don’t know specifics as to the aircraft being flown or some of the precautions being taken.

Then you act like I’m the one being disingenuous while you and others spew fear and hysteria over this virus both here and in other threads.

This is a health crises that looks and acts exactly like the past half dozen we have had, but somehow this is the one we need to be afraid of.

Oh and they aren’t even quarantining all evacuees now. So while your narrow attempt to put words in my mouth like I owe you some sort of apology in all this could be one side of it, the comment I made of forced quarantined actions a la Outbreak falls pretty short of what’s actually going on. You’re using a weak straw man argument to act like you haven’t stroking egos of those just as afraid of this disease or needlessly inflating the risk of it through their interpretations of the media’s reports. What’s more you knew full and well some of the others comments like “quarantine of aircrew” were completely not happening but you still liked on those posts anyway. So who is being dishonest here for no purpose other than your own opinion.

Calm the F down.

You're the only guy in here who doesn't seem super calm.

I’m not the one in this thread citing “but my family” for reasons as to withhold aid/services to potential patients. I’m also not selectively leaving out realities known to be true to try and build this current health crises into something it isn’t or pretend the precautions being taken (which are justified) or something greater and scarier than they really are.

Go to an floor of any hospital using its infectious disease protocols and it will look damn near identical to what the worst we are seeing in the media right now. My mother gets to exercise them routinely in her line of work as a nurse. The difference is I unlike some on here aren’t trying to pretend that’s some sort of obscenely scary scenario and not a regular protocol for a whole host of stuff not just the scary ones.

You guys need to stop pretending this is some sort of new terrifying chain of events. It’s not, we have been here, and with the professionals we employ to deal with this we will get through this and get the people that need it the help they should get.

TL;DR

I understand that. I specifically said that because the guy who's saying it's nothing to worry about specifically said "The fear around this disease is obnoxious. Again it is a flu based virus with a lot more knowns than unknowns". Go to page 1 to see our esteemed epidemiologist and the quote.

I've also pointed out in another thread, yes, it is of the same family as a cold. It is not a cold. We've talked about SARS and MERS also in the other thread.

I'm not saying it's the end of the world, but I am saying it's scary what we don't know so far. We don't know China's actual numbers. There are fringe reports that they're running incinerators 24/7 to get rid of bodies. Is it true? Who knows... It's China, so I wouldn't put it past them.

I was told by our esteemed epidemiologist that major quarantines aren't happening, and I've shown him where they are happening. I had a fellow crew member interrogated, and we haven't even been to mainland China. I'll see if I get any questions when I go back to the US today.

He's pointed out in some cases, people weren't quarantined. Tell that to the 2 cruise ships with people quarantined to their rooms (I think it's 2 ships quarantined now...frankly I'm tired of looking stuff up about this and ready to be home).

The thread started with a "would you transport patients?" No, I personally would not. I could have volunteered for those flights but chose not to. Ymmv.

I hope you aren't coming through LAX. They are dumping everyone from Asia into a small area for 90 minutes of waiting to be processed, ensuring the maximum possibility of transmission. Processing consists of collecting information, but no testing, before releasing in to the wild. It's so obviously bad it's negligent. If one infected person comes through, then any idea of containment is probably over.

Nope. CVG. Glad I'm missing all of that fun. ;)

Just remember, there's nothing to worry about...this is all overblown hyperbole from the media.

The fact that it's all overblown hyperbole is the reason I'm not panicked. If I thought this disease was as bad as the flu, I'd actually be worried. It's obvious that with the responsibility placed in the hands of morons, the US government can't be relied on for anything.

With the "known" numbers from China right now, it's 10 times more deadly than the flu. Only time will tell.

Again, the numbers from China are hospital admissions, and the mortality rate for those is significantly lower than the flu.
SARS started with a mortality rate of around 4%, but ended up being in the 14-15% range. This new nCoV just surpassed SARS deaths, and is about to pass MERS in death toll.

The American death in China was interesting, at least to me.
Chinese media reported that the deceased was Hong Ling, a geneticist who specialized in rare human diseases. He was a graduate of Wuhan University who went to study in the United States in 1987, receiving a doctorate in biology from University of Arizona in 1994 before doing postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley.

Hong went on to join the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a Department of Energy lab managed by the University of California, in 1999, according to a report on Sina.com.

We were all asked if we'd been to China in the last two weeks coming back in as crew. Everyone said no, which I find rather unlikely. But then off we went to the hotel/home, etc.

It surpassed SARs deaths with at least five times as many people in hospital as the total SARs cases. That means it's not as bad.

Well, there's points for not doing worse than nothing. Participation trophy?
