Geoprefs for Pubnat 8

ugh, i would love to get nashville!!!! that area is absolutely beautiful. and TN is the best state ever as i have previously posted! prolly why it is the most sought after.......go vols!!!!

Absolutely, ATMs generally don't want people from out of the area and people generally don't want a job out of their area. But this isn't just any job and my husband and I are not just any people. We are definitely the types that can go anywhere and get comfortable. Also, many people applying for this job are single and don't have a lot of ties to friends and family. Being ex-military or ex-pilot means you are used to moving around. It's a federal job and relocation is just never out of the question when you work for the government. We're willing to do it, and go anywhere, if it gets him the job.

Also, the reason you listed geo-prefs on your application was because you filled out a standard application for all FAA jobs. The form on the application doesn't fit the purposes of ATC, which is why the application instructed you to select "Throughout the Nation" since the PUBNATs are national announcements. There was a rumor though, at the time, that they would be doing away with geo-pref emails and going off the form so we listed "Throughout the Nation" for the first and states for the other 9, just to be safe. We also filled the entire comments section with the facilities we wanted in order of preference by state. You can look that up in the regular PUBNAT 8 forum.

Nothing wrong with being a little OCD at times, I do the same myself WoH. If I was still single and without wife and child, I would be more open to going anywhere in country, but for my marriage's sake, that would not be good. My wife is all about being close to friends and family - as am I but not nearly as much as she is - and TN and KY offer us the best option for that. It would be nice if the geo preference offered more than 2 states to be chosen, bc we would be up for some other places, just TN and KY would be the best 2.
Thanks for the info about BNA jerms. That's good to know going in. Both Louisville and Covington KY have pretty big airports, I wonder how they are looking for new hires this coming year?

2. Go ahead and tell them if you want a specific facility. Give the name or the code, either is fine.

I've always heard not to do this. I want FAI or JNU, but I've always heard to just choose the state (AK) and the counties (boroughs) the facility is in. Is it really ok to just put "JNU or FAI" in the comment box?
 
This is some pretty great information! Does anyone know anything about the staffing levels for MI? I have put it down as my top choice for 5 and for 7. I know I'm probably :deadhorse: but I live in MI!

PS-I put down TX this last time too and by the time 8 rolls out I'm going to put just about anything that gets me hired!

I listed specific facilities and got an offer for my first choice. I don't know if it works like that or I just got lucky, but that is my experience.

Hey there.. just a heads up for a fellow buckeye. CMH and DAY are both not hiring for FY2010. I got picked up for CMH, waiting patiently in line. Doubt they will put applicants in line for CMH and DAY, especially CMH from the line of people with TOLs waiting to get in it may be a few years, but CLE I am not sure of - I hope you get ZOB or CLE!! Thanx for the heads up. I am hoping for CLE first and then ZOB not because of tower/center prefs but because I live a lot closer to CLE then ZOB. But if it meant getting the job I will commute or just move.

I'm also from MI. I've heard MI is not hiring (surprise, surprise), but you never know. If your in Davison you could try putting OH and putting Toledo down as a preference - it's only about an hour away.

As far as I've heard, states such as AK, WV, WY, MS, and LA are looking for people. I'm putting AK, but that's only because I love the Great White North. Don't put a location where you won't be happy. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Mississippi or Louisiana.

Also, another question: is it possible to put down first and second choices in the same state, or do you just list facilities you would be willing to go to? For example, could you list AK: 1) JNU, 2) FAI; or just "JNU or FAI?"

I listed mine in the order I wanted them and got my my first choice. Probably doesn't have anything to do with how I listed them, but you never know.

I guess my real question with the Geo. Prefs. is: are they reviewed by an actual person, or are they just run through a computer program?

A person...in theory.

There is no guarantee that anyone (person or computer) will ever look at the comments. It's really up to the people on the selection committee and I'm sure each one handles applications differently. Some might be nice and try their best to get you what you want. Some might not look at it at all because they don't care.

As far as I'm concerned there is no reason not to say anything you want in the comments section. I don't think it can hurt. No one is going to say, "Well I was going to give this guy a job, but it bugs me when people list facilities in the comments section so I guess I won't." If they have a job for you, the comments section won't really matter. If they don't have a job for you, maybe something in the comments section will cause them to give you a second look.

Let them know if you're open for more than just 2 states. It can only increase your chances if the 2 states aren't hiring. This is especially true if you're open to go everywhere. This is the number on thing I suggest including.

Let them know what you want. You won't get what you want unless you ask for it. No harm in asking. If they can't place you there, they won't throw your app out, they'll just put you somewhere else. It's only a preference.

If you're going to turn 31 and it's your last chance...say so. If it really is your last chance than you have nothing to lose. Someone might just take pity on you.
